A flyer battle began when authorities attempted to prohibit pro-democracy activists from handing out flyers campaigning to ‘vote no’ in the August referendum while junta-volunteer flyer distributors faced difficulty and resistance from local people.... (read more)....

Update: Anon Nampa, human rights lawyer, reported at 9:20 am on Friday, 24 June 2016, that the police refused to grant bail to some of the pro-democracy activists and filed an additional charge against the 13 activists for refusing to sign the police report.
The Thai authorities accused 13 pro-democracy activists of violating the junta’s political gathering ban for distributing flyers campaigning for the upcoming draft constitution referendum.... (read more)....

BANGKOK — Police this morning pre-emptively arrested activists en route to commemorate the 84th anniversary of democracy in Thailand.
The arrest of activists for recognizing an occasion once celebrated as a national holiday marks a further uptick in the junta’s suppression of its critics and comes a day after 13 others were arrested and charged for campaigning against the regime-backed draft constitution..... (read more)...

BANGKOK — Thirteen activists arrested Thursday for campaigning against the junta-backed constitution will stand trial before a military tribunal on charges of violating the ban on political protests.
In further evidence the regime is not tolerating any dissent in the run-up to the charter referendum on Aug. 7, all of the activists, including members of the New Democracy Movement, were brought to the martial court just before 2pm to hear the charges which could see them jailed up to two years.... A Thai court jailed seven activists on Friday for campaigning against a military-backed draft constitution which will be put to a referendum in August.

Academics expressed their pessimism over Thai democracy 84 years after the country abandoned absolute monarchy and became a constitutional monarchy.
The academics took part in a panel discussion on "The Future of Thailand and Transition to Democracy" on Friday.
They agreed that Thailand's democratic development suffered from interruptions from military coups.
They blamed military dictatorships for the slow progress of the Kingdom's democracy.

Senate ‘could choose as many PMs as needed in five years’

DEPUTY Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam yesterday put doubts to rest over how many times appointed senators would select a prime minister under the draft constitution.
In the August 7 referendum, voters will cast ballots on whether to reject or accept the charter and they will answer an additional referendum question on whether they agree with allowing the Senate to pick the PM during the Senate's five-year term. Some observers believe the Senate and MPs can jointly select the PM at least twice.

Burin Intin: from a welder sympathetic to the Red Shirts to lèse majesté detainee

Burin Intin, a 28-year-old welder from northern Thailand, was arrested during an anti-coup “Stand Still” protest, held on 27 April 2016, at the Victory Monument in Bangkok. Unlike other group members who were arrested and subsequently released, Burin was promptly charged with two counts of lèse majesté. He was denied bail, has been detained until today and is now on his third custody order, without much public knowledge.
When hearing his name, many people may wonder who Burin is. Burin is not a high-profile political activist nor a layperson who frequently appears in political gatherings so that people remember his face. Burin is simply a “nobody”, and this may be the reason why the public has been so quiet regarding his detention.... (read more)...
