I read this through, over time, and never felt the urge to post. But, he bought books he can't read sort of answers your question - one of your or both are crazy. Especially if you think anyone believes this.
Moreover, whoever buys books on software development in 2018? A lot of this stuff is available via open access online and cdnmatt being the supposed online whiz should have been able to point his bf in the right direction.

People are buying fewer physical goods altogether - see this Bloomberg article. I don't buy any physical books, magazines or newspapers any more; I use Kindle for books and subscribe to the Twitter feed of a range of news sources which I then read via Flipboard. For magazines I subscribe via their Apps and the iTunes store. A tip for those who read sources that impose a limit on the number of articles you can read for free within a time limit. Use "In Private" browsing or a browser such as Epic Privacy and you can read as much as you like (cue for the "Cheap Charlie" accusations)
Re: Tell me I'm not crazy...
I do exactly the same thing. Hundreds of books on Kindle and magazines on my Ipad. Can't imagine buyiong a book.

Have you tried Twitter via Flipboard? An absolute godsend
Re: Tell me I'm not crazy...

Since you select your sources you don't have to read Agent Orange unless a news source quotes him. And there's no obligation to tweet yourself. Flipboard does more than allow you to follow Twitter however, so it's well worth investigating

Your right! Flipboard is amazing.

spoken like a true believer that all you need for a career in "software development" in the Internet age is a few MOOC courses - I mean who needs computer science and software engineering skills when you can develop and distribute your "killer app" on the mobile app stores with a couple of dodgy, insecure and unstable public libraries and a few code snippets from stackoverflow
but yes cdnmatt with his life savings in bitcoin and extensive "whiz" skills should have been able to direct his BF, even with limited English skills, into a suitable career path as a cdnmatt clone
