Big Junta is Watching You
December 13, 2015
Guest contribution by Adam John
The Junta uses mass surveillance over the internet in Thailand to crush public dissent. The military not only plans to extend its surveillance programs but is also moving towards legalizing its abuse of the internet under Thai law.
Edward SnowdenтАЩs revelations in 2013 confirmed our worst fears that everything we do over the Internet and on the phone is collected and recorded by the National Security Agency (NSA) in the US with major support from the UK and the other тАШFive EyesтАЩ countries; Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Many governments around the world have introduced or are planning to introduce their own national mass surveillance programs and Thailand is no exception..... By THE EDITORIAL BOARDDEC. 13, 2015
Since it seized power in a military coup in 2014, ThailandтАЩs military junta, led by Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha, has become increasingly obsessed with controlling public debate. This reached absurd proportions on Wednesday, when the Thai police announced they were investigating United States Ambassador Glyn Davies for possible violation of the countryтАЩs l├иse-majest├й laws that make royal insult a crime..... A Thai publisher has for the fourth time since September removed another article from International New York Times about a recent lese majeste case.
According BBC Thai Service, the Eastern Printing Company, a publisher of the International New York Times in Thailand, has removed an article titled тАШThai man charged with insulting Royal dogтАЩ off the front page of the 15 December 2015 Issue of the International New York Times.
Instead of the headline and text, an empty space contains the simple message тАЬThe article in this space was removed by our printer in Thailand. The International New York Times and its editorial staff had no role in its removal.тАЭ

US, Thailand Resume Strategic Dialogue in Boost for Strained Alliance
Washington and Bangkok hold high-level talks for the first time in three years.
By Prashanth Parameswaran
December 16, 2015
On December 16, the United States and Thailand resumed their strategic dialogue for the first time in three years (See: тАЬExclusive: Managing the Strained US-Thailand AllianceтАЭ).
As The Diplomat reported last week, U.S. assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel will lead the delegation to the 5th U.S.-Thai Strategic Dialogue scheduled for Wednesday (See: тАЬUS Top Asia Diplomat Travels to Thailand, Laos and JapanтАЭ). That is a significant move as it will mark the first time the dialogue has been held between the two allies since June 2012 when it was held in Washington, D.C. The alliance has been strained since a coup in Thailand in May 2014.
The dialogue, the State Department said in a statement issued last Friday, would cover тАЬthe full range of the political, security, and economic cooperation with Thailand.тАЭ These include issues such as public health, climate change, trade and investment, education and youth programs, law enforcement cooperation, combating trafficking in persons and transnational crime, and other areas..... Park Statue Scandal Puts Thai Junta on Defense
Military, police play whack-a-mole to try to keep lid on growing scandal
Thailand has undergone an extraordinary paroxysm of repression in recent weeks, with actions that include the arrest of a 27-year-old factory worker for insulting King Bhumibol AdulyadejтАЩs dog Thong Daeng; the worker faces up to 37 years in prison.
In a major breach of diplomatic protocol, US Ambassador Glyn T. Davies has been threatened with arrest for insulting the monarchy by voicing concern over long l├иse-majest├й prison sentences. Facebook users are being charged for l├иse-majest├й for clicking тАЬLikeтАЭ on satirical Facebook pictures of the royal family. The country has been shaken at the very top of military and police circles by a series of mysterious suicides, deaths and disappearances.
What is going on? With the country already in lockdown since the May 2014 coup led by Army Chief turned Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, the increased level of repression seems to have little to do with restoring order or protecting the monarchy and a lot to do with protecting the military and the police from mounting scandals....
