JAKARTA, Indonesia - A powerful earthquake hit Indonesia on Wednesday, causing buildings to sway in the capital, and authorities issued a tsunami warning.
The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.9, the Indonesian Meteorological Institute said. It said a tsunami alert had been issued.

JAKARTA, Indonesia - A powerful quake struck measuring 7.9 struck near Indonesia's Sumatra island on Wednesday triggering tsunami warnings in Indonesia, Malaysia and India, officials said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a small tsunami hit the Indonesian town of Padang while Global TV reported that several buildings collapsed the town, located in West Sumatra.
The United States Geological Survey initially said on its Web site there was quake measuring 8.0, and then a short time later said there was a quake measuring 7.9 at slightly different location causing confusion about the number of quakes.
