I need to pick up a cell phone and a laptop to take to Yangon with me. Where is the best place to check on a cell phone and a laptop? Nothing expensive, just useful.

Thanks, Francis

Assuming(?) he means to buy in Bangkok: try this link for some info << http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Buying-La ... 22626.html (http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Buying-Laptop-Bangkok-t122626.html) >>
Guess I would mention the obvious, Pantip Plaza, but the ThaiVisa thread above points out some downsides of that place. It's fun and crazy, but I would be very leery about buying anything there simply because a very large proportion of the booths there give off a rather vaguely 'unsettling' vibe.

My inclination would to buy a laptop at one of the well-known brand name stores (I would guess you can be assured of the efficacy of the warranty in such places): There is a Sony store in MBK and at the Emporium, and Toshiba has a area in Siam Paragon Dept Store (I've had a Toshiba laptop for 4 years now and it's never let me down or cost me a penny in that time).

The main IT malls in Bangkok are listed here: << http://www.bangkok.com/shopping-compute ... index.html (http://www.bangkok.com/shopping-computers-audiovisual/index.html) >>

I've looked at laptops in Thailand quite a bit and frankly, I think it's more than likely a better idea to purchase one in your home country and bring it to Thailand. The prices in Thailand for the brand name computers are not much cheaper than at home, and even more expensive when you see what you get for about the same price.
I'm sure some guys here who are more high tech knowledgeable than I am might disagree, but that's been my experience.
For an idea, take a look at this Thai IT retail site: << http://www.shop4thai.com/en/brand/Toshiba/ >> Those prices are high as far as I'm concerned . . . at least on average a few hundred dollars (CA) more than for approximately the same laptop configuration I can buy in BC.
I'm bringing my laptop with me in September and leaving it Thailand. Hate lugging those fat boys all over the world.

I can echo smiles Toshiba comments. Had my Equium almost 2 years now and never a problem with it which is amazing given the amount of abuse i give it. best buy i made computer wise . Toshiba now do some good low-medium price models. I may be tempted to buy one as a backup/replacement for my desktop.

I wouldn't dream of lugging my full sized laptop around the world, but a Netbook is just fine for surfing the web plus a few other small tasks. These weigh around 1.2kg & fit in a small rucksack. You can pick up a padded neoprene cover for around ┬г10.

The following are UK links, but I saw quite a few Netbooks on sale in Bangkok last year, so no doubt you can find the same type of product there.

MSI (UK) (http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/438666/msi-wind-black-or-white-with-win-xp/)

If you want it solely to surf the web whilst on your travels, a really basic machine should do, as you will not fill the hard drive:
Cheaper netbook (http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/436652/acer-aspire-one-a110-agw-3g-intel-a/)
These will fit in your hotel safe, although even if it gets stolen, it's not a disaster at that price.

Don't get anything more than 1 to 1.5kgs or you won't want to lug it around... at 1.5kgs you won't notice the weight.

I didn't want to lug my full size laptop around last trip to asia so I bought the Acer Aspire One 10.1" notebook. Very pleased it for the basics, email, web browsing. Good battery life, 6 hours or so (with the six cell battery version), weighs just under 23 lbs (about 1.4kgs)

Don't know why you would need to buy a cell phone to take to Yangon. You are not going to be able to use it there. It would take months and several thousand dollars to get very, very limited service.

Agree with rincondog. Cellphone service very difficult. Internet even worse. as far as I've heard.

So how are things in Miramar these days?

July 15th, 2009, 08:31
THANK YOU TO ALL! I appreciate all of the shared info and data about phones and laptops. Have copied all!

ozora: Thanks for your information. What you wrote is about what my friend is saying. Yes, he has a new phone number every so many days!

I have a girl in Yangon who seems to have ALL of the proxy servers listed in her head and can find one rather quickly!

Any suggestions about a good place to buy a cell in Yangon?

Thanks again, Francis

Beach Bunny. Things are fine in Myanmar. If you are asking politics I have no comment as I think most people in most countries involved in politics are war criminals!

I work with several gay groups in Yangon and Mandalay. The whole gay movement is growing, slowly, but growing. What has been a very internet connected gay community during the last several years is now beginning to develop into a bar, restaurant, night club connected group. Money from Singapore is funding much of the 'club' movement. Suddenly small groups of gay friends are now connecting with other small groups all over the city.

Next week I meet with a Myanmar gay group in KL.

Historically it is interesting to follow this whole process in Myanmar.

Really? Are you sure? Do you mean *gasp* one of the local experts here was wrong when he claimed Miramar was correct? Please don't tell me that he was wrong about Mae Sot being in Chiang Mai, too. My confidence in this board as the end-all in accurate reporting will be completely crushed.
