Natalie Appleby and her fiance know all too well the problems Annice Smoel faced - the Perth couple went through a similar ordeal last month.

While Mrs Smoel, a mother of four, is safely back in Melbourne after spending four nights in a Thai jail on charges of stealing a $50 bar mat, Ms Appleby still shivers at how her fiance suffered a similar - and much more expensive - fate.

Like Mrs Smoel, Ms Appleby's fiance - who only wanted to be identified by his first name, Michael - went for a drink in the popular Aussie Bar in Phuket.

He had surprised Ms Appleby, who travelled to Thailand last month to act as bridesmaid at a friend's wedding, by travelling to Phuket.

On his first night in Phuket, and the night before the wedding, Michael went with a group of people to the Aussie Bar.

"He doesn't remember finishing his second drink. The next morning he had no recollection of the night but found he had woken up in a Phuket jail," Ms Appleby told WAtoday.com.au.

Michael manged to find an English-speaking detective in the jail and made a phone call to his worried fiance.

Her father went to see Michael, and things began to get worse.

"First of all they tried to charge him with stealing, but a Thai lady there said the shop he was accused of stealing from was actually closed," Ms Appleby said.

"They then said they had made a mistake and charged him with damaging the roof of a house. There weren't any houses there, but they said it would cost $5000 for the charges to go away. They said if we talked to the Australian Consulate, (Michael) would be taken to the Bangkok Hilton (the notorious Thai jail, Bangkwang prison)."

After negotiating with a detective - "he wanted the money in an envelope" - the family paid $3000 to have the charges dropped. Ms Smoel pleaded guilty to her charges - in order to leave Thailand - was fined $38 and placed on a good behaviour bond.

"(The detective) told us everything would be sweet and to enjoy the rest of our holiday," Ms Appleby said.

"We could've done like (Mrs Smoel) and fought the charges but he would've been there for quite a few more days. Michael was obviously petrified. There were big, big grey patches in what they were charging him with."

Michael left Thailand for Perth almost immediately. Ms Appleby suspected his drink had been spiked, and said the incidents were a warning for Australians visiting the tourist mecca.

"People need to know to watch out. You need to be with friends and they need to be watching out for each other," she said.

"You have to be careful of having a big night. It's a shame. I don't want to say don't go there, because it can be good, but maybe the bad publicity will make them clean up their act. People there say this sort of thing is happening all the time and Thai prostitutes will drop drugs into Westerners drinks.

Just got a PM to remind me that BBB once posted that he and his mates in Aussie bar in Walking Street, used to enjoy throwing cans at "poofs" walking past.

Aussie Bars in both Phuket and Pattaya appears top attract the bottom end of the market, and always will

As long as they only target riff raff causing problems, it's OK.
When they target respectable gogo bar customers, that would be a problem.

Respectable old men patronizing places of (illegal) boy prostitution? Your definition of "respectable", please?

possibly going into any bar called Aussie Bar with the mostly ghastly beer mats is good reason to be punished..but it does show that forum like this is very good for the community to get to know which establishments are trustworthy.

No-one can doubt that Thailand is full of nasty rip-off joints where anything can happen to an inexperienced visitor whether they be Aussie, German, British or so on.

You simplify the matter Fatmann though.

I think it's highly possible for this man's story to be true and few newspapers actually pay for a tale like his these days. (believe me..they can't afford it)

There were a spate of quite vicious rip-offs around the Sunnee area which involved a supposed policeman and a lad just shy of 18. Several farangs paid large bribes rather than test the cop's credentials. The conspirators seem to move onto Bangkok after a few scores and then re-appear in about 12 months.

You have been warned.

Always check that ID and never accept one as being for real. Sometimes it pays to stay in hotels where a visitors ID is kept at the front desk. The one time I was told by a hotel desk clerk that an ID was a bit suspect but a small payment would facilitate entry I paid the visitor off..gave the clerk a gratuity and fled to my room for a lonely night of DVDs.

Never ever take a chance and leave everyone happy..that's my motto.

As to the Aussie lady. The diplomatic storm brewing in Australia with the entire media backing the woman..young, blonde, blue-eyed and with 4 very appealing similar young blonde daughters was overwhelming.

It was crucifying Thai tourism in Australia at a time not needed and the storm was gathering pace each day.

Possibly that is why the local Governor personally visited the lady and offered a face-saving deal all round. A small fine, suspended sentence, passport back and an offer to re-visit Thailand any time in the future.

She will however go onto sell her story to the huge selling tabloid style magazines in Australia and tabloid TV shows. I'd hazard a guess that the Aussie version of Mx Clifford..Max Markson is already her agent.

The loser of course is the owner of the Aussie Bar...and indeed I'm sure any bar owner with the same name (there must be many) are hammering up new shingles as we speak.

Not only has he shown himself an utter dill by involving the local police, he compounded the calamity by claiming the woman had been arrested for insulting undercover Thai police and doing likewise at the station. This is proved somewhat different to the actual charge..stealing the infamous (and hideoyusly ghastly) barmat.

He manage to ignite an entire nation of his countymen , who he obviously hoped would be his patrons, against visiting his establishment, and managed to insult the Thai police at the same time.

Why many people believe...even on this forum...that just because a farang has managed to open an establishment and therefore must somehow take on new status as an honest and non-fuckwit is mystery as constantly demonstrated by the endless attacks upon new gay bars that open around Pattaya and the persistent belief that some drunken owner of a guest house always tells the truth.
