I had never heard of this condition, to which Thais are particularly vulnerable, but apparently today is Thallasemia Day.

It is a particularly nasty genetic blood disorder.

Thais share a propensity for it along with many peoples along the Mediterranean littoral such as the Greeks and Lebanese.

Couples can be tested to see if their children might inherit this. In some European countries such tests are mandatory before marriage.
