Melbourne Herald Sun
from correspondents in Bangkok

March 04, 2009 08:22pm [0922 GMT]

A GROUP of academics have launched a campaign to reform tough laws protecting Thailand's widely revered monarchy, amid a growing crackdown on alleged violators.

More than 50 foreign and local experts, including famed linguist Noam Chomsky, have signed a letter to be sent to new Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva which says the law is being abused for political ends.

The letter was unveiled at a packed press conference at Bangkok's Foreign Correspondents' Club and hosted by two experts who addressed the meeting via internet videophone.

"How far are we going to stand idly under this climate of fear? The lese majeste law has created the climate of fear," US-based academic Thongchai Winichakul told the press conference over the video link.

Lese majeste, which in Thailand means insulting or defaming 81-year-old King Bhumibhol Adulyadej or any members of the royal family, is punishable by up to 15 years in jail.

Last month Australian writer Harry Nicolaides was pardoned after being sentenced to three years in jail for slandering the crown prince in a self-published novel.

Giles Ji Ungpakorn, an outspoken political science professor, fled to Britain last month after he was charged over a book about a 2006 coup in Thailand.

The campaign letter calls for the release of individuals jailed under lese majeste laws, a reform of the law and an end to "suppressive measures against individuals, websites, and the peaceful expressions of ideas."

"As scholars and sympathetic observers of Thailand, we are extremely concerned about the recent legal actions taken against Thai and foreign citizens under the lese majeste law," the letter said.

"Instead of protecting reputations, these lese majeste cases generate heightened criticism of the monarchy and Thailand itself."

Thongchai and press conference co-host Andrew Walker, who spoke from Australia, both said work commitments had kept them from attending in person but admitted to feeling "cautious" about attending such a discussion within Thailand.

The monarchy's role in Thailand's recent political upheaval - involving a self-proclaimed royalist group which blockaded Bangkok's airports last year - remains one of the most sensitive subjects in the kingdom.

Officials say more than 4800 webpages have been blocked since March last year because they contain content deemed insulting to the monarchy, and that at least 17 lese majeste cases are currently under way.

Abhisit has previously defended the crackdown, telling AFP that there were "historical and cultural differences" between Thailand and other countries.

Have you totally Lost it .

ARE YOU SO DESPARATE TO BE SEEN WRITING SOMETHING, YOU HAVE TO WRITE THIS CRAP.
Well now I know your loosing your marbles OLD LONLEY, I know your nearly 80 years old, but to write about the king on an Open forum, your just asking for trouble, cant you see how your inciting others to answer you in a derogative way.

IтАЩM ALMOST LOATH TO ANSWER, BUT FEEL SO STRONG ABOUT THIS, I HAVE TO, EVEN THOUGH IT WILL MAKE READERS BE MORE INTERESTED, THINKING ITS SOME THING FUN IтАЩM WRITING ABOUT.

I think this thread should be closed. far too dangerous in my humble opinion. :angryfire:

Are you a native English speaker? May I ask what kind of education you received (or didn't receive, as the case may be) to result in your apparent inability to differentiate the words "lose" and "loose", and "your" and "you're"? These are not typos -- you consistently cock them up (is that where your nickname comes from?) in every post I have ever seen you make.

Please, sweet Jesus, tell me that you are not teaching English to poor Thai kids.

Oh dear who let the spelling nerd in here.

. Putting somebody down by pointing out their bad spelling also a power thing

I hope you realize its an obsessive Illness trying to correct others spelling, trying to let others think your far more superior.

If you have always had a dream of being a teacher, why donтАЩt you just try to send your resume to any Good school, IтАЩm sure your get one of them, if you have a degree.as I hear you need these days

I see you can now get treatment for your obsession, of trying to correct other people spelling, it seems to come from your child hood, when you was trying to control people and you never quite made it,now it comes out if you find any excuse to let others know how superior you think you should be, but no fear you can get treatment for it.

Quote from Prof Pauline Wallin, a clinical psychologist from Camp Hill, Pa.

The English patient
Stress can affect how forgiving people are of spelling and punctuation errors, says Prof Pauline Wallin, a clinical psychologist from Camp Hill, Pa.

тАЬWhen people are under stress, they have less tolerance for minor frustrations,тАЭ she says. тАЬThink of the harried mother rushing around trying to get her kids ready for school who loses it when one of them canтАЩt find his homework. Spelling is something concrete and has a definite right answer so it does make you feel temporarily in control.тАЭ But we donтАЩt just notice mistakes, the psychologist notes. We also pass judgment and assign blame for them.
But there are plenty of other principles at play as well.

An obsession with proper usage may be related to some kind of perfectionist streak, she says, or it could have to do with childhood patterns of wanting to please adults or teachers by doing things right. Putting somebody down by pointing out their bad spelling also could be a power thing.

Attribution theory comes into this as well,тАЭ she says. тАЬMy mistakes are caused by external circumstances, but othersтАЩ are caused by a lack of skill or a character flaw.тАЭ

You should get Help fast. Its obvious your a control freak.

speaking of correct english..I had an english master when I was about 10 who used to thrash the living daylights out of me..he'd go to the fatherest corner and take a running leap and come (probably cum as well )crashing down with his cane upon my hand, several times.

So I have an obsessive fear of people attempting to tutor me english...and he had either an obsession (or love) for beating young lads and watching them dance around in pain...but that's bye the bye..

I haven't called for any monarchy reform and I'm a monarchist through and through..a socialist monarchist !

I cannot wait to pay homage to HRH Queen Camilla 1. :queen: Princess Anne waved at me from a car once, but that's a story for another day.

In fact-I seem to be surrounded by royalty..as I walk down the street I often hear.."oh here comes that old queen again" and I spin around and look every which way but never catch a glimpse of her.

March 4th, 2009, 22:12
I'm not trying to be the spelling police, I was simply wondering -- justifiably, I believe -- how an individual gets through one's mandatory education and decades of life without acquiring a halfway decent mastery of one's own mother tongue. It is completely beyond my understanding. Even after pointing out that you continually misuse "your" for "you're", you go and do it again in your response. Please enlighten me. Did you finish high school? Did you sustain a brain injury some time during the course of your life? Are you spastic?

actually it's not so much the spellings that amuse me as the malapropisms ...

That was Princess Victoria dear, it was a carriage and she wasn't actually waving, not with just one finger!

I have previously defended Cockalicky in this forum. Sorry about that. I now understand why he is often given grief in here. He is a bully and interminable ass. His present position on this issue is without any merit.

Of what use are fair weather friends?

Cockalicky, Beach BunnyтАЩs criticism of your linguistic prowess is beyond the pale. Beach Bunny is either new to the board or has a short memory.

Cockalickey, obviously Beach Bunny is unaware that a year or two ago you reported you had just completed a course at a residential school in Rayong which qualified you as an English teacher. Furthermore the instructor declared you to be the best student in his class. Then, I believe, you reported you were obtaining a teaching position somewhere in the north.

I attempted to find those reports, to put the Bunny in his place, and to respond to those who scurrilously impugn your veracity. I couldnтАЩt locate the posts, but feel you should re-post them in order to check this slanderous criticism.

March 5th, 2009, 10:28
Sorry, but you've got the wrong person. I have never taught English in my entire life, and never intend to.

Sorry 'bout that Bunny.
My use of pronouns may have made that post ambiguous. They have now been replaced with proper nouns.

Also, when you re-read my post donтАЩt forget to put your tongue in your cheek.

You were not the person being referred to

Thanks for the clarification.

Clearly, Cockalicky has no business whatsoever being anywhere near an English classroom. Unless, of course, he is there for remedial grammar and spelling.

ThatтАЩs very nice of you, but if you read the posts again, your see I'm doing nothing more that defending my previously good name from Control freaks, as you would.

I donтАЩt mind stories being made up about me, but to say I'm not an Intellectual is beyond the pail. :geek:

At least I have achieved what I set out to do, try to derail this dangerous post, in case some one started writing about the Royal Family or even anything near them, so they will not get into any trouble.

But in so doing it had made a boring Post Interesting, thanks god?

Perhaps, we can put it down to just 'style'. Is it really important anymore
to spell correctly and use proper grammar?
I am no defender of the latest incarnations of the 'village idiot',
but since it has been many decades since any of us have been in school the spelling/grammar police need to take a break and give it a rest.

One of my favorites is the use of 'sole' for 'soul' and since I don't have to
read any of the silliness and self aggrandizing dribble, my suggestion to one
and all is use the foe list..

once last thought on the matter.. English native speaker teachers in Thailand only teach speaking and comprehension. They do not teach grammar or spelling, which are covered in the Thai schools by Thai native
teachers.. :cat:

Absolute rubbish.

Anyway, back to the original post. Since the article appeared in The Nation today, perhaps Cockalicky can explain why it upsets him so much to see it reproduced here?

Because The National News papers have a team of Lawyers to watch what they can get away with here it may tempt some Guy naive or vindictive to say something the wrong people may read as many web sites are constantly monitored by the web Form Cops.

what a cow you are-being distantly related to a minor royal always produces the most frightful snobs.

Although perhaps you are correct as I do re-call at the time-as I was being led into the Bow Magistrates Court by a walloper on some trumped up charge of being a man dressed in women's underwear-that I called as the carriage passed "oi guvnor..spare a penny for a poor lass"..directed to that handsome kraut Alfred. I do now re-call Victoria's finger was at an angle it shouldn't be.

But really-fancy being asked to "master your mother' tongue"...ehhhhh..like lesbianism-surely would leave a foul taste in your mouth !

I do agree though..cockalilly is being very butch these days.

For the first, and probably only, time I agree with you. This topic cannot be discussed without risking the board where such discussion takes place being closed; a factual report, as made by the Nation, is very different to stating one's views and an open debate.

Recently I was watching a Thai government debate on TV - the only interesting/heated moment was when one MP used what another claimed was a word reserved only for royal use, resulting in a prolonged argument, demands for the MPs removal, etc, etc. While farcical, it was nevertheless serious.

Posting links to these articles is fine, but they inevitably degenerate into debates on the monarchy which are subsequently closed - hopefully before some line is crossed. If Spike wants to take that risk with his livelihood, that is his choice.

According to an article in the Bangkok Post the Thai lese majeste law protects foreign royals as well. Those bandying about the names of HRH Victoria and Albert may be exposed.
