"Economy hotels next for Erawan
Ibis brand will tap growing demand ,SUJINTANA HEMTASILPA, Bangkok Post

The SET-listed Erawan Group yesterday announced plans to diversify into the economy hotel sector by collaborating with Accor's Ibis brand. The move would tap a projected increase in budget and business travellers to Thailand, particularly from China and India, said Kasama Punyagupta, Erawan Group CEO. ''The Erawan Group is to become the stock market's listed 'proxy' for the Thai hospitality sector, covering all main market segments. An equity capital issue will provide funding support for the expansion,'' said Mr Kasama.

The group recently signed an agreement with Accor to build up 10 economy hotels under the Ibis brand in Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai and Krabi. The group plans to build six hotels by 2008 and another four by 2010. Each property would have between 200 and 250 rooms and cost between 300 and 400 million baht.

The main characteristics of the new Ibis properties would be simplicity and value-for-money. Room rates would be no more than 1,200 baht per night, said Mr Kasama. Accor runs 23 hotels in Thailand, with 13 more scheduled to open in the next two years excluding new hotels set to be opened by Erawan. ....."
