Interesting. Google now has an instant translation page: English to Thai or vice versa.

I can't read enough Thai to say how accurate it is, but I tried a couple of simple things and my friend said they came out OK.

For those of you unable to read my telegraphic message above:

Google, Inc., now provide a website where it is possible to enter text directly or from websites in either English or Thai and, at the click of your mouse, have that text translated from English to Thai or from Thai to English.

People who are better able to read both English and Thai than I am have stated that the English to Thai service, though not flawless, works better than the Thai to English service.

I entered a couple of simples phrases in English and translated them into Thai. My friend, who happens to read Thai very well and English reasonably well, confirmed that the resulting Thai translation was acceptable. Neither he nor I offer ourselves as experts.

Since the service, whose website is linked above, is free, you should not be unduly worried about spending money for something you might not use very often.

If you want to impress your Thai friend or if you want to figure out what the hell he is writing about or if you want the details from a website in Thai offering to enlarge your penis to amazing dimensions ... this service might prove useful.

You pride yourself so much with your spelling and grammar and never fail to criticize others, but I don't understand what you're trying to say.

I don't understand what you're trying to say.

And that's surprising why?

Ah, I see. I wasn't familiar with your name or past contributions, but searching your previous posts I think I could see a certain distinctive style emerging.

What a tool you are. I hope your dick falls off.

Both your avatar and you are creepy gra45. I recommend you subscribe to some porno or something.

People...let homo allow himself to live his life through this board. It is the only entertainment he gets.

Yes homo, you win the shiny plastic badge for being the spelling police.

I wouldn't be surprised if his next post was: "Should I feel guilty putting my peen up Pot's no-no hole."

Thanks for that, very useful. I've just used it to write an email to my boyfriend and I will be very interested to see if he can understand it.

Do let us know his reaction. I suppose it will have some glitches, but will undoubtedly improve with future refinements.

Thanks for the link, X - it's pretty cool! I hadn't heard about it yet and it'll probably come in handy any number of times. I suppose it might also be a handy tool for guys there who don't own a copy of this...

By the way, I've read burning lemongrass can keep pests like mosquitoes away - it might work for diec, too.

What a useful sounding book. I'm sure it's sold its way through several new printings. At least we know young monks are learning practical lessons.

I suspect diec has inhaled much more than burning lemongrass.

Well it worked for a fairly simple email message. My boyfriend described my Thai as "you read thai good" which knowing my boyfriend means "You write Thai well".

I've not explained to him how I did it yet. His written English is very poor as are his reading skills so this could be a useful extra to aid comunications.

The Google translation tool has been around a while. I have a block on the lower left of the forum index that allows you to choose between 20 or so languages and use either Google or Babel Fish to translate the site. Thai is not currently one of the choices. I think that is a new addition. Thai is a tricky language to translate. I'll see if I can add it to the choices in that block.

x in Pattaya...

All I can say is THANKS a million.

Not only was my Thai friend able to read and comprehend a fairly lenghy message I sent him using the English to Thai translation, I was also able to reverse this (Thai to English) translation and read Thai with only minor glitches.

I've wanted to understand what guys are talking about on sites such as Hi5 and Thailandout for years, and now I can finally open the door.

Thanks again, as this is a valuable tool, not only for reading Thai, but sending those long romantic e:mails to our Thai fans.

Well done.

Its kind of funny the way it translates Thai to English. Due to the lack of punctuation in Thai and the way they group phrases together and put spaces between the phrases instead of between words, it interprets phrases as sentences. This combined with the metaphors common in Thai speech and writing make the translated Thai look like an attempt at poetry.

Thanks also for the link. I use Google for more things than just email, but I've never stumbled across that one.
I too will get His Majesty's critique and (possibly) outright approval.

Pay no attention to Diec ... he's the official Board Idiot, as I note you have already discovered.
"No-no hole"?! :thumbright:

I guess these days we expect computers & the Internet to do marvellous things, but I thought the speed and (I guess) accuracy were remarkable.

When I asked my friend to get up from his computer and walk over to mine to check out a couple of examples, he confirmed the translations, but I could tell he thought it was no big deal. Since I can still recall my first computer, an Apple IIc & dot matrix printer ... later a cutting edge Mac with a 20 Mb external HD... and hearing people talk about something exotic called "email," I'm still able to be dazzled by such things, but then I remember in the dark ages watching Flash Gordon & the Clay People on one of the 5 B&W TV stations we had. I wonder whatever happened to Ming the Mericless.I bet he'd be fascinated by Google translation service.

This worked well:...

Well, the boys & girls who slaved into the night at Google couldn't have imagined the impact their little service would have on bringing everyone together. What's "Kumbaya" in Thai?

I will say my fairly comprehensive hand-held dictionary doesn't even have a Thai word for "troll."
