Hi, Can anyone recommend a gay-friendly (i.e. no joiner fee) hotel in pattaya near the action, but not openly gay-orientated? I have to give the tel number of the hotel to lots of people here and I don't want them all to know I am staying in a gay place. !00 to 1500 baht per night would be good. Not the Ambience as I hear it is overpriced.
Thanks.

Why don't you buy a cheap cell phone and give them that number? If you are outside Thailand, buy it upon arrival and email the number to them.
This would give you more flexibility in case you decide to change hotels anyway. It would also prevent anyone from knowing the area in which you are staying.

I always stay at Welcome Plaza Hotel, off 2nd road. A 2 minute walk to Boystown, 10 minutes to Sunee, 1 block from Beach Road. Not gay-orientated, but no joiner fee. Good swimming pool area. About 850bt per night.

The Lek Hotel is also well worth considering. Have stayed there a couple of times with boy special, and no problems whatsoever. Just the place if you want a 'respectable address' while at the same time no problems having a male guest with you. Always found the staff helpful. Probably a good three quarters of the guests are straight, and a high proportion of those appeared to be 'sex tourists', but always a few other gays there like me when I stayed, and no problems from other guests even in lifts. I always took a standard room in the new building as I had read reports that the rooms in the old building looked tired. Breakfast buffet extremely good value, good selection, and your Thai friend will love it because he can help himself and go back again and again for free! Good location... just a few blocks up from Boystown on 2nd Road. As far as anyone is concerned, its a good budget hotel that doesn't have any gay labels.
You can book and get the official blub at http://www.asiatravel.com/lek/index.html.

I did a google on the Lek Hotel and it will bring up a number of reviews which generally were quite good. But on one site there were a couple of reports in the last 3 months which didn't rate the hotel... but if you check the reviewer you'll probably understand the reason for those negatives. Its a good clean budget hotel in a good location with a bargain restaurant. Definitely worth a try. But check those other straight threads, you may find alternatives for value... but obviously people like us appreciate that gay friendly element.

I agree with Dick on all the above. I had a nice stay there a year ago and found the staff to be friendly and easy-going, overall. They didn't seem to care about couples of any sort.

I will say (again, as in another post about the Lek) that there are NO non-smoking rooms in the hotel, period. If that bothers you - and my room smelling rather strongly of tobacco bothered me the first day or so - be warned. Otherwise, the buffet food's good, the rooms are comfortable and the location is great if you like to do as much on foot as possible because it's faiy close to the beach, the song taew routes, the malls, etc.

This is the pool/buffet area:

Try Grand Hotel on Walking Street, rates from 1000Bt, no joiner fee, and you can walk to Boystown & Sunee with ease.
