Koh Samui & Phuket - May

Hi, my return visit to Phuket after nearly 20 years and my first visit to Koh Samui. Taking the Boyfriend, his first visit. Looking for hotel recommendations, prefer a mid-range to somewhat upscale hotel (but, at least, not gay unfriendly). Looking at the Amari hotels, Buri Rasa Village in Samui, and Patong Bay Gardens in Phuket. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated (have checked out the archives with little luck - since I want a place with a pool, that rules out most of the gay hotels).
Will be there in May (not the best time, I know) - but..... Don't really know how bad the rain is?

The Central Samui Beach Hotel is in the best location for the bettershops and restaurants at the

south end of Chaweng beach

There are some great beach front hotels, if you care to pay the price.
