What do Thais earn doing unskilled work, such as serving in a convenience store?

I heard 28 bht an hour, for someone working in a convenience store in Pattaya (directly from the guy concerned).

If it's normally that low, then there must be quite a substantial gap in earnings between unqualified workers & the middle classes, judging by the way they spend it.

This is based on 2005 averages (I think ...or maybe it's 2005 purchasing power), but there probably hasn't been that much of change. Looking at the construction worker levels, I'd say the average I've known about has been higher that what's shown here... maybe B 7500 to B 9000, so maybe this understates by a bit. It might also depend on whether the worker is Thai or Cambodian, et al. and whether the work site is in an urban area or in the boondocks.

Obviously the formatting got lost. The columns are job title *** Gross monthly Salary *** average weekly hours worked

X, I think your wage rates are a fair bit out of date. Minimum wage rates vary from 150 to 203 baht per day depending on the province ( http://eng.mol.go.th/statistic_01.html ). An unskilled security guard (usually the real bottom of the barrel) would get at least 175 baht per day in Pattaya; serving in a convenience store (7-11, etc) usually requires a full 12 years of education so the salary would be higher, so 225 - 250 baht a day (28 baht per hour) sounds about right.

Geez...that means that a popular gogo boy earns as much (or more) than an airline pilot.

As an after thought, I guess they should: No long delays...service with a smile...and a smooth landing every time.

Thai minimum wage rate for 2008 was 5200bht per month any salary above that is then taxed.

A boy I know just applied at Tesco Lotus they pay 32bht per hour. :angryfire:

the unskilled salary rate is quite low....32 baht, 40 baht, even 50 baht...
But if you think you, as a farang, can hire Thai labor and pay this rate, you are dreaming.
A cleaning woman in BKK charges 200 baht per session of "light" cleaning: mopping floor, wiping table and chair, toilet, sinks, balcony floor. All of these usually take no more than 1 hour for a 70 sqm 1 bedroom 1 bath condo unit (usually 45 minutes). Is this a skilled job? I don't think so, but you, as a farang, will not find a cleaner if you won't pay 200 baht minimum for this 1 hour cleaning session. And it is cash payment, meaning the cleaner never pays tax on this.
In addition, cheap labor does not equal to quality labor. Thai workers produce less quality. For example, my cleaner in the U.S. does a much better job than my cleaner in Thailand. When I complained to the Thai cleaner, she simply smiled and said Mai Peng Rai, and did nothing to improve.

Okay. Their reference to 2001 and 2005 and using US$ and Purchasing Power Parity were a little confusing.

The National Statistical Office (of Thailand) shows a 2008, 3rd quarter average for males as B 9288.60 and for those in retail (and similar) work at B 7779.10. per month.

When my friend blathers on about construction work, I think he gets B300 a day in the rural areas and someone else told me he was making B8000 a month for general cleaning work.

In the NSO tables on non-Agricultural sectors there's " Extra-territorial organizations and bodies." B 27, 330.80

Maybe extra-territorial bodies is code for Gogo Boys. :drunken:

I agree. Give your cleaner the sack Hon.

When I am staying in my condo, I pay maid 200B per day. This is for light cleaning, running a few errands, shopping at Big C, preparing lunch etc.

This is 'easy money' compared to most other jobs.

the normal working day is at least 10 and often 12 hrs. and with the just raised min. wage/for BKK to over 200/that makes indeed an hourly rate of 20/25 for non/skilled labour normal. Many students here in BKK on part/time work get indeed like 28/33 bt-hr/like waiting tables, in those minimarkets, etc., The Khmer I know/factory work/tipically make 130-150 bt a DAY and not per hour. One should note that in many places though food and or lodging is as good as free. And the daily wagerates are tipically adjusted 2-year with just the assumed inflation/and thats not at all 50% in 4/5 years!but much less.
Yes/that makes me again wonder why what is often said to be the ┬┤┬┤going rate┬┤┬┤ to have tripled in maybe 10 years/out of line with any price or wage hikes. and yes/thats indeed what is the drawing factor for many chao na┬░farmers sons to get into the fleshtrade. even an ┬┤┬┤off┬┤┬┤ every 3/4 days makes them earn more/at what they seem as much less effort.

Please, please don't mind the wild stories from Thai how much they're making every month.
Just a few hours ago I talked to a host-boy in Pattaya:
He IS a host-boy.
Gets a weekly allowance from his German bf of THB 8000
Has 2 jobs and brings another THB 6000 per month
Some offs will bring another THB 4000

BUT according the labor law the minimum wages for 2008 were in Chonburi province THB 158 per day.
A working day has 8 working-hours;
3 breaks: in the morning, at lunch time and in the afternoon.
Overtime starts 30 minutes after the working time has finished.
Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays are OT and will pay resp. 125, 150 and 200%.

Tax is exempted between an annual salary of THB 1 and 100,000

joseph44, I didn't think there were many wild stories - after all, your friend the host-boy has told you what he is making, and the salaries for staff at 7/11, Tesco-Lotus, etc, are published. Most jobs give a maximum of one day off a week (some less) and Saturdays and Sundays are very seldom paid at a special rate; many employers also prefer to give an extra day off in lieu of any extra pay for a holiday, as the other staff are used to cover for them.

Pong, saying that food &/or lodging is "as good as free" is a bit one-sided; to you deducting 2-300 baht for "lodging", 50 baht for electricity, 20 baht for water and 10 baht a day for a single basic meal may sound "as good as free". To a Thai waiter in a restaurant, or the cleaner, sharing his room with 10 others, that is a fair chunk of his salary.

X, the last time I looked some of those "extra-terrestrial bodies" did not look quite as heavenly as they used to!!!

All you have to do is look at the rates escorts in other countries are charging compared to the salary rates in their countries to understand there is no link in any country, anywhere.

and for some herein lies the rub, as many visitors DO tie in their ideas of western salaries and escort rates into their trip to Thailand, which may be considered inappropriate.

Nothing to do with whether a boy is paid to much or too little, the question is are you being ripped off? There have many threads on here about how much to pay a boy, and by and large the average figures seem fair.

For what its worth I employ skilled staff with salaries between 15k and 30k a month - on which they happily raise families, run cars and motor bikes and take care of their family.

I do find it unbelievable that people would work for about 30 bht an hour, when (if the above posts are correct) they could get about 3x that being a maid.

As they have already been disputed, maybe that could indicate whether or not they are correct?
