Thai opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has won a majority in a special parliamentary vote for a new prime minister, according to an AFP tally.

British-born Abhisit crossed the threshold of 220 votes for a simple majority in a vote called on Monday.

It is nearly two weeks since a court dissolved the ruling party and barred premier Somchai Wongsawat from politics.

I wish him the best of luck. His win comes with a heavy burden. Somchai must have given a sigh of relief when he was asked to quit.

"Police were seen looking on idly." Were they more interested in arresting pedophiles in Pattaya?

235 to 198 - interesting, as the 41 seats from the banned PPP and allied members will be voted on in by-elections as soon as the royal assent is given (it was unavailable prior to the recent vote). All could change again if their party replacements are re-elected - if so, it is back to square one!
