Is pattaya about to enter recession . With the drop of most western currancies against the thai bht, has the time come for pattaya to face a real downturn

everywhere will suffer from a recession and the drop in other currencies makes it a real problem but I believe Pattaya will actually fair well compared to other holiday spots because of it's uniqueness ( you know what I mean !) and the fact it is still unbelievably cheap compared to anywhere else.

When times get bad people get a mentality of wishing to have as good a time as possible and stint on many things..(obviously the mortgage comes first0 but I reckon cheap holidays will be all the go !! The real problem..getting there. If flights prices go up too much...another reason why the Russians will come in larger numbers. Charter flights and package holidays.

However the Russians may decide to holiday closer to home, and the busloads of Chinese from the mainland will probably decline. There are some interesting businesses for sale in Pattaya on the Sunbelt Asia site, which may be a harbinger of what's to come. My guess is they've left it 12 months too late to sell for a decent price

Jomtien does get busy during long holiday weekends. Many Thai seem to come from Bangkok to get away. They'll leave on Sunday and Jomtien will be back to normal on Monday.

Yes, and I bet you'll be out there flashing your ankles for a bit of vodka, you cheap hussy!

Believe me, any destination that relies on tourists as the mainstay of its economy ain't seen nothing yet. It shouldn't just batten down the hatches; it should bolt the buggers down! It's going to get nasty.

You are right. I'm a cheap hussy so I'll do well in the current climate.

oh and also..I think's it's going to get much much nastier..after reading houses prices in the UK have dropped 35% in some areas and people should expect them to fall 25% further..the debt tsunamai is still building and heading everyone's way.

Hi
This article is in the current Pattyamail.com

"The 80% reduction in incoming tourism to Pattaya during this high season from Asian countries due to ThailandтАЩs chaotic political situation was the subject of a brain-storming session by Pattaya City and tourism officials on October 9."

Maybe a downturn but not a recession. I sure hope it doesn't get nasty.

Maybe a downturn but not a recession. I sure hope it doesn't get nasty. It's a bit difficult to determine whether one town in the whole of Thailand is "in recession" or not, since insufficient statistics are published for local areas within the country - if you can believe the accuracy of any Asian government statistic anyway (maybe Singapore's the exception). However an 80% decline certainly sounds recession-like

Meanwhile..an expert's view on tourism :Tourism? It's just national prostitution, says Prince Philip
Prince Philip has branded tourism тАШnational prostitutionтАЩ in his latest unfortunate gaffe.
He made the shocking comment to a professor during his State visit with the Queen to Slovenia last week.
Dr Maja Uran revealed that the 87-year-old Duke told her: тАШTourism is just national prostitution.тАЩ
He went on: тАШWe donтАЩt need any more tourists. They ruin cities.тАЩ

Tourism can have devastating effects and in the case of Thailand it certainly and definitely is "national prostitution"..........

I wonder if we will start to see special offers. Off two get the third free, or pay short time and get all nighter.

Poor Phillip..doesn't he realise the only reason tourists to go to London now is to go and look at his house !

Slovenia sounds great from all reports..beautiful beaches..beautiful countryside..cheap and a budding prostitution industry.

... as discussed in another thread I posted about the recession, I feel it won't be too long before the Brits coming flocking to Thailand even with the weak pound. Interest rates are about to plummet, there is talk of even a rate of 1%, now if you think only a few months ago it was 5.5%, that's an awful lot of money one can save on mortgages etc. It will encourage us to spend spend spend. Dunno about other countries though, the US is an economy with a mind of its own and Europe has relatively low interest rates anyway, well in comparison to the UK. Dunno about Russia I'm afraid.

October 27th, 2008, 20:54
... yes the bht is strong at the moment and I'm not certain which way it will go, whether the BoT will step in or what, but I am sure that interest rates in the UK will come down which will give Brits more money, and well that speaks for itself.

If interest rates come down only Brits with debts will think they "have more money" and they don't have money; they have debts.

oh is it really ??..Latvia..yum yum..and there would be blondes there as well...or do you mean it's noisy, smelly , smog filled and full of tarts ?

I hope your information comes from a more reliable source than a porno video !! could have been made in Manchester for all we know.

they might feel richer at home, but the pound vs Baht will get worse, so they will be less likely to come here

Not personally!

...and Out to Lunch, the link to the video was not mine. The nickname is well documented, and I was first informed of it some time ago by someone I know who has lived there fo several years.

I came to BKK many years ago when the rate was Bt42 to the ┬г.
Still managed to enjoy myself.
As I limit my visits to go go bars these days I don't need to spend as much.

Yes and look what you got for 42 to the ┬г, lots and lots, its would be a different story if there were 42 to the ┬г now!

My annual vacation in Thailand will be the last to go. I'd rather quit smoking!

Determined to make it next year, although my 'New Toy' budget has been adjusted to compensate.

OTOH, I've noticed Thailand becoming less an less user friendly in recent years, so this user may be looking for more genuine smiles in other Asian spots despite higher living costs.

I understand the economy is bad all over. All the more reason to go on vacation and forget it all. I will just dip into pocket and spend a bit more baht and have the same wonderful time as before. Glad the next trip is on the Air Line with frequent flyer miles. Can't imagine it getting so bad as not to go Tahailand. I'm still meeting new nice guys both Thai and farang and plan on doing so for the immediate future. I realize at my advanced age the day will come when I say, the trip is too much for me and then I will stop, but not till then. An observation, 70 years of age does not sound as old to me as it once did.
