In Hua Hin this last week we had a visit from two members of this Board (Mr Bob and Mr George ... and Mr Ron who is not a member). Mr George being under the weather lasted 3 days, just enough for a plate of delicious Pad Thai at Corner Restaurant and ended up in bed for 52 hours, emerging just in time to drive home to Pattaya looking well-rested and ten years younger.

Bob however, came out of his shell with a Grande Mal case of sperm-buildup caused by the sexually arrid woods of norther Michigan and who ~ late at night ~ cruised Faqtong and Guys Bar mercilessly, cutting a crazed and horny swarth(?) through both, leaving a dozen exhausted, satiated, and smiling Thai guys, lying in his wake on the sidewalk between those 2 bars and his hotel.

Yet funnier and more gentle times were had, such as 2-hour boat ride on this sublime lake west of Cha Am, and surrounded by the cool mountains from which Burma can be seen in the far background.

This lake is man made (we are standing on it's dam taking the photo below), and creates a background which reminds me very much of a Canadian landscape. But it's full of fish, and thus Thai fisherman casting nets and throwing lines.
A lovely cool boatride worth the 1500 baht (for as many folks as you can stuff in ... our group was 3)

A day or 2 earlier, a trip through the surreal mangrove swamp at Pranburi caused a first-ever sighting of the feared Great Mud Troll . . . an apparition who's horrible appearence causes Thai's to fall to the ground in uncontrollable laughing fits. No Thai has ever seen the face of the Troll (so ugly is he), but the story goes that, if viewed, it causes the nearest Thai person to be frozen immediately into granite (see below), face affixed with his Last Smile.

And that is why ~ according to Mr Suphot ~ that the Great Mud Troll's nickname is 'Smiles'.

I guess your talking about the Kaeng Krachan National Park? I see two lakes in that park. One to the north accessed by rt. 3499, Kaeng Krachan dam. The other one further south, Pranburi dam. Which one did you go to for the boat trip? Have you been to both? I see between the two lakes is what I think is the park entrance, have you been there?

This last link is Thai Forest Bookings. I use the site to plan trips but have never used the booking service. So far, I have found that either just calling the hotel and/or searching other hotel booking sites have resulted in better prices.

Beautiful picture of the lake, Smiles - I'm going to have to make a point of planning more than the hit-and-run visit from earlier this year and see some of the nearby scenery.

I could probably miss the Mud Troll and not feel cheated, though.
