....What would be the dominal effect of this tourism and the Bhat?

Domino effect on tourism - NONE
Domino effect on the Bhat- possibly very minimal decline

The article you quote is almost comically alarmist. A $675 mil deficit in one month is just "noise" and is hardly a "shock".

I'm going to make you do your own homework on this one Stevie.

Go to the Bank of Thailand website - English version Bank of Thailand (http://www.bot.or.th/English/Pages/BOTDefault.aspx)
You can find all the reports and statistics there.

Question: What is the year over year trade deficit/surplus and how does it compare to the previous years?
Question: How much foriegn reserves does the Bank of Thailand hold and have they been increasing or declining over the past year? By what %?
Extra Credit: How big is Thailand's trade deficit/surplus compared to its GDP and how does this ratio compare to America's? Britian's?

Just in case everyone else is too busy/lazy/bored to work it all out for themselves here is the link for the BoT's report on economic and monetary conditions for Aug. Economic and Monetary Conditions for Aug '08 (http://www.bot.or.th/Thai/EconomicConditions/Thai/Documents/PressEng_Aug08.pdf)

And a quote from the report:
"Exchange Rate and Nominal Effective Exchange Rate (NEER). In August 2008, the baht
averaged at 33.86 baht per US dollar, weakening from the JulyтАЩs average of 33.50 baht per US dollar. This was
caused by an improved sentiment towards the US dollar as well as importersтАЩ constant demand for US dollars.
Moreover, foreign investors continued the outflow from the stock market. The NEER strengthened from the
preceding month, rising from 75.68 to 76.46. Even though the baht depreciated against the US dollar, it appreciated
against other regional currencies.
During 1-26 September 2008, the baht weakened to an average of 34.32 baht per US dollar. This was
in line with regional currencies as well as the continuation of importersтАЩ demand for US dollars and foreign
portfolio outflows from the stock market." (emphasis mine)

Honestly Steevie, this is way too much economic arcana for anyone to bother with unless they were heavily investing in Thailand. I only looked this info up in response to your post, and I probably wont bother looking it up again unless I were going to invest in Thai stocks.

If you think big cocks have nothing to do with tourism to Thailand you have wandered into the wrong forum.
