Dumb post of the day.

That depends on Thaksin's instructions to the military when he declares the state of emergency. My guess is he will not expel foreigners.

Also unlikely, but everyone SHOULD give some thought to, is the possibility that the foreign community will have to flee the violence, much as all the expatriates did from Java some years back. In order to avoid getting stuck in some expensive hotel in Singapore you might email your friends there and tell them you could be visiting ;-).

I would probably just flee back to the US for a couple months.

March 15th, 2006, 09:17
Why even fuel such stupidity? At the height of the violence in 1992, there was never even a thought of expelling foreigners from the country. I was here throughout, and in spite of the blood running in the streets, life went on pretty much as always in all but the area around the Democracy Monument (even the bars were open -- I\'m sure that\'s the main concern of many posters here).

Do you realize how many foreigners there are in Thailand at any one time, and what a massive airlift it would take to get them all out?

March 15th, 2006, 10:41
... in the thread someone started about "what might happen after the election", let's all just pool our ignorance and misinformation and have a thoroughly uninformed and speculative "debate" (known as a "mass debate")

March 15th, 2006, 11:00
You left out \"stupidity\".

March 15th, 2006, 11:51
Last night on our TV we saw hundreds of thousands (supposedly) of government supporters on the road to Bangkok, mostly looking like farmers, going to stage a counter rally. Hope it will not end up in the land of tears. Though one pictured had a load of veg, so they could all be going to market instead ?

Oh Cedric! You'll do anything to bring Silom back, won't you?

March 15th, 2006, 15:22
Though one pictured had a load of veg, so they could all be going to market instead ?

Probably just everyday traffic and media whores stirring shit--As usual.
Time for someone to step up--As usual--and ask if the bars will be closed.

Suggestion: On nights when bars are closed use the time to fervently pray\wish\light a candle\whatever: for the long-life of the King. If he should pass away the bars--And much else--may be closed for a month.
(It will look like) the fall of Saigon.

yes but think of how marvellous you'll all look in black.

yes but think of how marvellous you'll all look in black.

Do you mean, clothes?

Aunty
March 15th, 2006, 16:07
um in Mr Sydney's case I hope so.

In the case of others, oh I don't know, did you have something else in mind? Leather and Latex??

March 15th, 2006, 18:21
Just saw the marauding throngs again, they look like quite an old bunch, but its deceiving as I do not suppose they use much factor 35 out in the paddy fields. They were armed with farming implements. The veg must have been for the picnic as this time they were having luncheon on the lawn and some on the pavement.

Taksin said on tonight's news "stepping down is quite a good idea, I am open to all suggestions" he too was having an al fresco luncheon with his cronies at the time. He is very fond of sambal or chilli as he was dishing it out much better from a little golden dish. He seems confident that his chosen successor will win, and it was smiles all round.

March 15th, 2006, 19:28
it was smiles all round.Thank god Smiles is still with us

March 15th, 2006, 20:20
Now now homintern, dont panic I am sure every-one will be just fine. :nike:

March 16th, 2006, 02:21
Once Thaksin goes, the country will go back to rack and ruin.
Looking on the bright side means cheaper prices as unemployment in Thailand will probaly get higher.
It will get like the Phillipines, speaking of the Phillipines i must go over there one day,i heard cheaper prices, better boys and better hotels.

March 16th, 2006, 05:00
...It will get like the Phillipines, speaking of the Phillipines i must go over there one day,i heard cheaper prices, better boys and better hotels.

and higher crime rate too.

March 16th, 2006, 06:56
So the alternative isnt so hot then?

March 16th, 2006, 08:53
Use your head. Thaksin has made his oldest buddy and crony Pol. Gen. Chidchai Wannasadhit the first Deputy Prime Minister. If Thaksin steps down, Chidchai will likely take over. TRT will still be in power, with Thaksin behind the scenes.

If you're imagining 24-hour bar openings, lifting of porn website blockings, and free-for-all sex shows after Thaksin steps down, you'd better think again. (That's all farangs care about, isn't it?)

I think only you, BG, can know whether all those things are why YOU are here or not.

It's good to see that he's talking to others finally on a plan.

March 16th, 2006, 11:01
Oh my mistake I thought elections were imminent. If he steps down they would still go ahead or not?

I dont really know what Farangs think about as I am not one of them. Please refer to me as a Gweilo. Thank you very much. And no, bars or whatever it is you know so much about do not figure very highly on my agenda.

Croak! I mean bye.

March 16th, 2006, 11:15
Elections are imminent, but there is no party but TRT. Who do you think will win?

March 16th, 2006, 12:46
Please refer to me as a Gweilo.

Why do you want to be known as "foreign devil", "strange non-human", "queer ghost".

I always find the term offensive and note that one does do not hear it from educated Cantonese speakers. More a "man on the yellow omnibus" thing and an attempt to denigrate and exclude.

Maybe we should refer to you as "Si fut gwei"?

March 16th, 2006, 14:14
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't both "gweilo" and "farang" mean exactly the same thing? I.e., a person of European extraction?

March 16th, 2006, 14:14
....speaking of the Phillipines i must go over there one day,i heard cheaper prices, better boys and better hotels.

And taxi drivers who kidnap you at the airport. `Sounds right up your alley: he might lock you in the kasylias.
Not to worry: they usually accept I.O.U.'s.

March 16th, 2006, 14:15
I'm sure you'll enjoy the wonderful cuisine in the Philippines, too...

March 16th, 2006, 14:23
I think I've given a list of plausible translations of the concatenation of "Gwei" (strange, different, not like us) and "Lo" (devil, ghost, not "yun" as in "Chung Yun" people of the Middle Kingdom who intercede between heaven and.earth). Your assertion that is ony applies to Europeans, young jean wearer, is really rather simplistic and possibly ethnocentric.

March 16th, 2006, 14:44
No, actually, it's not. It's from my knowledge of the use of the word in Cantonese. I have never heard it applied to anything other than a caucasian. Also, I believe that the literal meaning of the term is "ghost people" (kwai = ghost or spirit; lo = people) -- derived from the "ghostly" appearance of caucasians' white skin.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but a Japanese or black would never be called "gwei lo".

March 16th, 2006, 15:04
I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but a Japanese or black would never be called "gwei lo".

That is true. (I've just run it past my local authority on Cantonese, the in-house native speaker). But he tells me that if one wants to talk about Europeans without using the pejorative "lo" then one would say "Sai yan" (which is hardly ever heard.) Neither is Huk Lo but Huk yun is used for negros and yap poon yun for Japanese. So if you go solely by usage, then only the whites are devils.

Now if you say that "Foreign Devil" equals "Farang", then you must be saying that "Farang" is a derogatory term?

March 16th, 2006, 15:11
I said they mean the same thing: a person of European extraction.

Whether they are derogatory or not depends on how they are used. If someone hisses "that fucking farang" under his breath, it is certainly more derogatory than saying "I've got three people coming for dinner: two farangs and two Thais". Same thing for "gwei lo".

Neither is as patently derogatory on its own as, say, "chink" or "nigger". Regardless of how they started out, both are now in common usage in their respective languages to simply mean a caucasian person -- without any negative aspersions.

March 16th, 2006, 16:54
Oh well that explains that then. I dont mind in the least being called a Gweilo, or a guava when I am in Thailand. Ghostly foreign devil sounds good to me. We have at least ten more names to call the Chinese than just their one zesty number. Chinkychonk slitty eye .........its still quite commonly used the Gweilo thing, as a quick reference to your race rather than actually calling someone one, even if tongue in cheek. I think boygeenyarse is correct when he says the word has been assimilated into Cantonese to simply mean European.

So anarchy is the way to go in Thailand for awhile ? That or sit with "Thwapsin" for ever. Calm down and wait until he dies of old age?

March 16th, 2006, 17:06
No, there will be a Thai solution. And like most Thai solutions, it will insure that there are no real changes while no one loses face or gets their feelings hurt.

March 16th, 2006, 18:00
I always find the term offensive and note that one does do not hear it from educated Cantonese speakers.

Yes, they're more likely to use 'FILTH'.

March 17th, 2006, 08:03
Boygeenus you could be right. Then again it could all get messy and the police could form a government. Though I see some face saving in motion already. Last night and only one day later and Taksin said he has changed his mind about stepping down, he now says he "will consider retirement options" this could mean he now fully trusts that his fortune is safe in the hands of his old class mate General Chidchai Wannasathit, and he wont be stripped of his underwear should he "retire" to spend time with his family.

His wife must be fuming, to suddenly realise she has married a gambler. Dont suppose he has many choices left.
