Does anyone know about this place in Soi 6, Silom, Bangkok?

On night, I let a tout take me to a bar in Soi 6.

It was very late, around 2:30am. In the building, the ground floor had nothing, level 1 had a gogo bar with boys on stage and level 2 had this disco. When I went into the disco... there were lots of young boys there. There were some girls too. It had a bit of an edge to it. I refused to buy a drink when they told me it was 250b (probably because of the tout). Instead, I gave the tout a tip for taking me there and left.

What's the deal with this place? Is it safe? What kind of boys go there? I saw no farangs. What can you do there?

Ah, soi 6... a very odd soi, indeed. About six or seven years ago there was, for a very short time, a gay go-go bar there incongruously set right in the middle of all the girlie bars. It was called "For Love" and I met a delightful boy there, Joe from Surin, who I saw, on and off, over the next few years.

But recently a straight friend of mine took me to a girlie bar in the same soi 6 (for his purposes, not mine). I got into conversation with the elderly female mamasan who had worked there for many years - and she flatly denied that there had ever been a gay bar in the soi. (She could hardly have missed it - it was large and neon lit!)

Similarly, I have never met anyone who has ever heard of "For Love", let alone ever went there before it closed.

So - did I dream it all? Was there ever really a gay presence in soi 6 before the one we are reading about here? Or maybe the original poster dreamed his own experience too???!!!

There are about 3 or 4 ladyboy bars in Pattaya's Soi 6, but never seen any gay bars or upstairs disco venues. It is a real straight soi as far as i know. I drink down there a lot with the ladyboys and have a few nice eateries in soi 6 too.

Perhaps more people would volunteer information if the original poster cared to make clear what city and Soi 6 off of what street he was talking about.

A valid point by Chao Na, but as I recall Beachlover was visiting Pattaya.

Soi 6 Pattaya has been known for some time as Soi Ladyboy, as well as for the number of muggings that take place there. Visit very much AYOR.

Beachlover, you probably visited Pook bar / Ladyboy Bar - not to most gays' taste, but to each his own.

Ok, so it was in Bangkok.

Yes, the tout called it Soi 6, but I think it was actually a little street running off Soi 6.

The place was definitely a bit "off the beaten track".... I saw no farangs there. Only Thais... and really young ones, it seems. It almost felt like a high school venue. Lots of punk looking types too. It had a bit of a wild west, outpost feel... as it was the only place open in the middle of a dead street (that late at night) but inside the disco on the 2nd floor it was really happening. The gogo bar on 1st floor was dead. I don't recall anything open on the ground floor.

So nobody knows for sure what the deal is with this place?

If anyone's nearby, go check it out. I remember it's in a small but significant street off Soi 6. The building has big fluro-lit signs outside, indicating there are multiple venues inside. After 2am... it is probably the only place open on that street or Soi 6

No you didn't dream it up. It was however in Soi 6a or 61/2 which runs parallel. The bar was set up for Asian tours but lasted only about 4 or 5 months. I remember at the time the gossip was that many gays were too timid to walk past lady bars to enter and so would not go in. Another reason was the poor location.
I went a few times and was delighted to watch a bunch of about 7 young straight Japanese guys get up on stage and do a striptease to impress their girlfriends. Certainly impressed me.
Soi 6 aka Soi Yodsak is a soi famous for short time offs. Some bars there are now charging 1000 Baht to off a girl before 8 pm and 500 Baht after. Something to do with supply and demand and too many times the girls were offed early leaving hostessless bars.

I'm talking about Silom Soi 6... not sure what the others are talking about

I'm talking about Silom Soi 6... not sure what the others are talking aboutIt looks like 50:50 Pattaya:Bangkok. That's the problem with this Board - many people assume Pattaya = Thailand, so there's no need to specify since it "must" be about Pattaya. Yes, there are a lot of gay bars in Soi 6 and its adjuncts - let's just call it the "Soi 6 area", and they tend to be cheaper and (except Tawan, which is for Muscle Marys) twinkier than the Soi Twilight bars, although Classic in Soi Twilight - down the far end, near Balls Sports Bar - seems to specialise in twinks (thank god!). The Soi 6 bars also tend to have more "fun and games" going on in the bar itself between boys and customers (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). I didn't realise there were any touts still operating in the area but then I don't notice them since I work on the very safe assumption that any Thai who approaches me in the entire Silom/Suriwong area has to be a tout or a beggar, so I continue whistling "There'll always be an England" as I go about The White Man's Burden and pass them by. Certainly there always used to be the odd tout standing at the Silom end, so I suppose they're still there; I tend to enter and exit via Naratiwas itself, which is a tout-free zone and also easier to get a taxi back to the shanty or hovel where I eke out my existence on the meagre stipend boygeenyus pays me for being his publicist and providing him with spurs whereby he can vent in these Forums

Just to clarify, in my reply about the missing "dreamed" bar For Love, I was assuming that the original poster was referring to Pattaya...

Now that's it cleared up the original poster is talking about Bangkok (to most of the posters) you might have been taken to a small disco/bar called E doc. X boom has been gone for over a year. You should not have been going with a tout, get some free maps at the Balcony.

If you enter on Silom it's soi 6, from Suriwong, soi Thawan. In the 80's that was the center of the gay bars. Decline began around 1997 and on a steady slope down ever since. Attempts at a revival have not worked, though many do like Solid bar and Tawan has a following.

The rest, Nature boys, Super A, Nice Boys and Golden Cock are dumps, hands on type bars with few customers. Drinks 100B. 'Super A' back in the 80's was a big go-go bar with a lot of boys and many customers. The now long gone, Super Lex had the best show in Bangkok.

A few months ago I noticed a new bar/restaurant on the soi. It looked nice and then I took a look at the menu and could not believe the prices, very high. The Mango Tree used to be where the locals went, now under new management caters to some tour groups and when they leave it's closed.

The Barbary bar, formerly on Suriwong tried a up scale jungle theme bar there once, just before the 'Social Order Campaign' and did not stay open long.

I take a walk through there every now and then, just to remember the old days.

Samak wants to demolish your hovel and turn it into a public park. Could be good for cruising :bom:I must say I rather enjoy the notion that Samak has of merely relocating some slums rather than doing away with them altogether. And his is the party that believes it represents the down-trodden masses!

Thanks Trongpai... I guess I'll have to go back there to know what it was. I forgot the name. It might have had the words "flower", "golden" and "cock" in it... can't recall.

I was strolling down Twighlight when all the bars were closed... and this guy offered to show me a bar nearby. I was bored, and about to go to GOD so I thought, why not take a look. I tipped him 40baht for his time (refused to buy a drink, after they charged 250baht). I wouldn't have bothered to walk down to Soi 6 otherwise.

Doc or dok is Thai for flower. Usual price for drinks is 100B.

Screw Boy's was open, Patpong 2, far left walkway from Suriwong.

As long as I am strolling down memory lane: Soi Twilight is not the real name of that soi. Some maps of Bangkok don't name the soi, other's I have seen have two different names. The locals call it Soi Twilight named after the first bar on the right, now gone. Some of the boys call it soi Family Mart. The BBB group wanted to copy boytown with a similar sign for the soi but gave up on the idea.

Screw Boy is rumoured to be full of Laos boys.

Yes or I should say, maan

Classic bar - I'll vote for that. Fun bunch of boys of the gay "do anything" variety :bounce:

Classic has a rather peculiar Thai owner who leaves the bar in the hands of his often estranged Thai BF. Probably more gay boys than the others but the show is old and staff can be pushy.

Duangtawee just does not roll off the farang pallet with finesse and grace. I like Twilight.

I like Twilight. It's just easier to refer to it as Soi Prostitute

I visited Classic on my first trip to BKK a couple of years ago. Pushy is a good word for the staff. The boys were cute, lots of skinny boys who looked barely legal. Mamasan was pushing the drinks really hard and managed to talk me into watching the show with one of the boys for whom I would buy a drink. The youngish Asian customer next to me ended up buying drinks for 3 or 4 boys during the "show" and offed one of them. After which mamasan exchanged high-fives with the other boys...like they had gotten away with something. I like water shows, but theirs was pretty tired all right and the fuck show was shockingly un-sexy and a bit too much audience participation.

I think this was the place I went to... found at dreaded neds:

Golden Flowers
Soi Anuman Ratchathon (off Soi Thantawan, off Suriwong)
Phone: (0) 86344 - 4600
Now (October 2007) located a few doors down the road from their previous location next to Solid, still part of the X Group. Large bar, small stage, disco style tall tables and stools, drinks 100 Baht. Open from 2:00 PM daily, converts to disco after midnight

Naah, too confusing. Most of the neighbouring sois might have the same name, except their name-plate says differently :geek:

No sorry I don't. Some would accuse me of shamelessly using this thread as a vehicle for fine art from the orient, but it's not true. I simply felt inadequate at not being able to help er what's his name, so wanted to make amends with a little depiction of what they could've missed. Hope its appreciated as fine art and not smut, I know how particular Jinxie is. And I agree 100%, smut has no place on this forum.

Don't the bars close at 1am?

Nope. Never 1am. In designated areas like Silom the are legally allowed to stay open till 2am. In practice that can be anything from 2am onwards, depending upon that terrible corruption that abounds here.
DJ Station is now usually open till 2:30, 2:45 or 3:00. GOD used to stay open till 5 or 6am, but lately seems to close about 3:30am. Before the opening of GOD, there were bars in what was referred to as 'soi 6' which were open till very late, hence this thread.
There are still other places open very late, not necessarily in the Silom area.
