While reading blogs, I found the following article:

I did not realize that teenage boys could easily and cheaply get castrated in Thailand. Well, at least till the end of this year, when the Thai government will require a minimum age of 18.

Don't really know the pros or cons about this. On one hand, I feel that if someone really wants to become a female, he will be undergoing the procedure sooner or later. But then, why not wait till 18, right?

thought there was a big deal in the Thai press where NO one can get this done without living as a female for a whole year, under strict punishment for the doctor involved.

There are different thoughts to this but... Why does it seem that in Thailand there are more lady-boys/ transgenders / katoys in this country than elsewhere?

I think it's at least partly to do with social/family acceptance. Being a 16 year old transgendered boy or girl in Ireland, for example, is unheard of. Not because there aren't any, but simply because they can't 'come out'. It's hard enough to come out as a gay boy or girl in many places in the West - expecting people to understand transgenderism is an expectation too far! I've only know 2 transgendered people here in Ireland and their bravey just astonishes me.

Thailand is actually the world leader, followed by Iran; the actual figures are surprisingly low (particularly for those living in Pattaya!).

A study by the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong (http://bangkok2005.anu.edu.au/papers/Winter.pdf.) estimated that "In Thailand around 6 in every thousand born male may be living female lives; around 180,000 nationwide"; this study probably answers your question best.

The Iranian government pays for free SRS for those Iranians applying for it (US$5,000).
