DADT is under discussion again in that bastion of muddled thinking, the good ol' US of A. Apparently there are already gays in the military, and they're maybe telling - http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/t ... dy-in.html (http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/08/gays-already-in.html)

Despite the inevitable claims by gay pride groups, the real reason that there is so little opposition to gays in the US military, and even considerable support for their acceptance, by the "bipartisan group of high-ranking military officials (including the general charged with implementing DADT in 1993" and many senior US military has little to do with "gay equality" and far more to do with numbers. The number of those in the regular military and particularly in the National Guard who are liable for repeated tours in Iraq and Afghanistan who are "telling" and thus having to be discharged under Section 23 has been climbing rapidly in recent years.

While the "spin" will no doubt be a step in the move for sexual equality, the reality is that it is simply closing a loophole which has become far more popular and more acceptable than Section 22 (of Catch 22 fame), or living in exile.
