View Full Version : 800 registered members achieved

Congratulations to ES for reaching 800 members

It seems like only a few months ago that the discussion was on reaching 666. Was that the devils number or something close to it.

So much for the suggestions that this forum would wither on the vine and disappear.

I think that is most impressive. If people would spend a little less time criticizing what others post, and a little more time trying to be a little more interesting and/or informative, I believe it could even double, again, in size within a year.

And of course if the moderator stops moving the best and most interesting topics to the hinterlands. I understand if something is not Thai gay-related, but when something is moved for no reason, it's upsetting.

Regardles, this 800 benchmark calls for an emoticon:

It's nice to see numbers like that ... I guess.

But in fact the 800 number in itself is mostly meaningless.

All it takes to be counted as a 'registered' member of Sawatdee (or any other EZBoard for that matter) is to have a Global Account, come over here to look around, make one post, and voila, you're counted as a member of Sawatdee: Even if you never show up again, or post another message.

And that's what this Board ~ and most others ~ have. Click here on Total Posts (http://p092.ezboard.com/bsawatdeeforum.boardStatsUserLink?sortBy=totalPost s) (down at the bottom in the View Active Members list) and you'll see what I mean. The first page is loaded up with members whose posts are in the 600 ~ 3000 region. Just three pages later the number of posts per Member have dwindled down to 100. By page 8 the number is down to 14 ~ 20. By page 11 the number is down to 1 each ... and most of these so-caled "members" will never be heard from again.

Whatever the official membership count says, the Board, in reality, is comprised of a small number (not numbering much more than 100) of regular posters (bless their hearts) and a very large group who come here only infrequently.

This is not meant as a put down or criticism of this Board (I love it here! ), but simply as a description of the way things work out on ALL message boards.

You can prove it for yourself: if you have a Global Account, just visit a few other EZBoards and if their Membership View is turned 'on', click there and see the exact same dynamic in place.

Big, well-used Message Boards like this one ~ in so far as posting frequency goes ~ are probably a quite perfect example of Pareto's Principle . . . i.e. 85% of the 'action' is accomplished by 15% of the 'players'.

Cheers ...

I thin "Billy Boy" has about half of those memberships

Good point Smiles, but it reminds me of the last time Hedda replied to one of my posts... She thought less of me, to put it politely, because I seldom posted.

I have read this board more than 19 out of 20 days since it was formed. If y'all way my commitment based on # of postings, I rank low I guess. Others that read as often as I, with little to say, know better.

Was it S. Clemens that said, "It is far better to remain silent, and be pressumed a fool, than to open your mouth & prove it." ?

I bet he would have posted here more often than I as well.... *sigh*

Nothing has ever been moved for not being gay-related. Topics are often moved (almost always with a shadow left) out of the Gay Thailand forum if they are not Thailand-related. The "gay" part is just a description of our community. We have many diverse interests out side of our gayness, which can be discussed on any of our forums. We just want to keep the "gay Thailand" forum relevant to Thailand. All other topics are welcome in the Global Forum, which is hardly a "hinterland". If our Global forum were it's own seperate board, It would be the 4th busiest ezboard in the "gay" category. Sawatdee is #3 of : ezboards in "gay" category (http://www.forumfind.com/?c=21)

There are also lots of long-time Global ezboard members who have never posted on any board, but just log-on to read, in which case they would not be included in any boards "registered members" list. Try clicking on unfamilliar names in the "who's online" box sometime and you'll see what I mean. Also, I'm sure we get a lot of regular readers who are not even registered with ezboard, who will show up as "tourists" (guests) on ""who's online". According to the tracking software I implemented recently, we get close to 1000 unique visitors daily.

I don't think we should lament the fact that most readers never post. Imagine what your local newspaper would be like if it included columns written by every reader of that paper! You'd never be able to sort through it all.

As we approach our anniversary it is 1878 and growing daily!
When and where is the party Bob???

I see from the results of your poll, Jinks, that 50% of those who cared did not like your countdown jumping pictures.

Not that I would eveer consider it, but why is it that on your posts I don't get an IGNORE option? I do on all others including Elephantspike ( the resurrected )

Happy times ahead.

Are we still on EZBOARD?

Never mind the numbers feel the quality.

Congratulations to ES for reaching 800 members

The figure is fairly meaningless as many of the 'registered' members use or have used multiple identities.

I would be very suprised if the actual number is more than 300.

Nice post Rockytop, please post more. There is no one on here now as unpleasant to new posters as Hedda used to be, I think?

I'm confused...
Smiles2 a 'guest'
Spikes2 a 'Junior Member'
both refering to this board as an EZBoard. Perhaps I've enjoyed too much of the old Merlot, but isn't this the new spangly board that Spikes worked hard on to replace the Ezboard version (just before he vanished)??

Thanks, jinks, I couldn't have done it without you.

FYI:

This thread started over a year ago on the ezboard and was one of the threads that was converted to this board while it was still active. That's why it's in Gay Thailand and not Archives. That's also why smiles and I have posts on it using the ezboard versions of our names, and also why you can ignore Elephantspike2. That name is not an administrator on this board, Elephantspike is.

I just went through the member list and deleted about 50 members that were just automated spam programs that had registered names on the board. They are easy to spot; they either have 0 posts or one spammy post that has HTML links instead of BBcode links and they link to spammy stuff like online pharmaceutical mail-order scams. They also always have a website linked to by the "www" button in their profile that links also to some spammy site, usually also a pharmaceutical thingy.

By the time I was done, there was one brand new one to delete, too!

If I inadvertently deleted any real members, they can email me here and let me know

for penile implants, porn sites etc is happening on boards everywhere, not just here.
It must because there is a crackdown on email spam. Never click on the ones offering "cleaner" services-you will regret it ! :cherry:
