What is required for a foreigner to buy a car in Thailand?

An O or B visa and a residency certificate from Immigration.

Thanks. Not sure what an O visa is. B visa is business, right? So is it OK to come in one time on a B visa (to buy the car) then come in on tourist visas afterwards?

I know John very well and when he says he is selling a quality car you know that is just what it is. John has told me that all proceeds from the sale of this vehicle will be donated to "Thais for Life." John will not accept one dollar in profit...he will donate it all!! Please help our brown skinned lovers and purchase John's vehicle. Go John!!!

400,000 for a 4 year old ex-rental Ford Laser in a private sale is way overpriced, no matter who the proceeds may be going to.

the recommended price for it is 470,000 Baht as per Ford so 400,000 is a good price.

Agreed - if it was bought from a Ford dealer, with a Ford warranty. As it is for sale privately, with no warranty, no guaranteed dealer history, limited spares / service back-up (Ford Laser parts are not readily available in comparison with Japanese brands) and is not a popular model locally 400,000 is way overpriced in comparison not only with Lasers but with similar cars, such as the Honda City. 275,000 is more realistic and even then you would need to be lucky.

oh give the man a break...JB has a great reputation amongst local farangs and if he says it's a good motor and was his private vehicle then that's what it will be.

Let's not turn this into a bloody motoring thread but I owned and drove one of these in the UK (until the backseat driver sent me nuts) and I always have a Ford wherever I am..if I didn't already have one I'd certainly consider this.

The best thing is you just make sure you deal with one regualr mechanic in Pattaya ( ask JB !) and you will be looked after.

April 25th, 2008, 12:20
I thought I would never buy a Ford. But in recent years Ford has greatly improved its product I feel. So much that I bought the Ford Focus ST 2007 (eruo design not US) and I have been very satisfied. There is a large Ford dealer right on Suhkumvit past Home Works, so parts in Pattaya should not be a problem, I imagine.

Good luck John.

Thanks Pattaya Male. I have also been very happy with the car. Gone Mad is just on his usual attack John mode.

The "no guaranteed dealer history, limited spares / service back-up" comment shows his ignorance. The guaranteed dealer history is in the warranty and service book, stamped with Ford stamps. Limited spares? Crap. Never had a problem and as PM says there is a large Ford dealer on the Suhkumvit. Limited service? Again never had a problem with servicing the car.

And GM please tell me where you can buy a top of the range 4 year old Honda City, with full leather etc. for 275,000 Baht. Anyway my car is not the equivalent of a Honda City, it is the equivalent of a Toyota Altis or Honda Civic. Please compare like for like.

John, you should know by now that Gone Fishing has never allowed the true facts to get in the way of his attacks on people.

Sad really that people like him have such empty lives that they need to fill them with vitriolic attacks, but that is a good measure of the man.

I owned and drove one of these in the UK

Really? I thought it was just a Mazda 323 rebadged and only distributed in Asia unlike the much vaunted "World Car" Mondeo.

So what was it badged as in the UK? Escort, Focus, Taunus, Fiesta, Capri?

Having looked at the pics, maybe it was the Orion body but I thought that had a bigger engine.

"Turn this into a motoring thread"!!! Did you notice that the thread is about selling a car, how could it be anything other than a motoring thread? Mrs O'Booze must having been giving you a blow job at the time of that thought.

According to taladrod.com, the value of John's car is 385,000.00 baht. Perhaps not such a good deal at 400,000?

Particularly as JB states in the advertisement that he is selling it for 70,000 below the list price.

I do recommend this site for car prices to the Resources Forum.

yes Brad my dear it's a thread about selling one particular car and potential buyers are advertised to get out and kick the tires and such as I'm sure they will ..

..not rabbit on about how manufacturers market their products under a variety of different names in different countries or next we will be talking about how Australian Fords are re-badged and sold as Cadillacs in the Middle East....there we are..we already are !! so much for quality as I doubt Arabs would accept rubbish.

Now I have a set of Mrs OB's hair curlers I'd like to get rif of (illustrated here) and you can have them cheaper than cost price-in fact I'll pay you to take them away. But you have to take what's attached to them as well.

Does she take her teeth out to give you a blow job? I am informed that this is most effective. So advises Mrs Beeton anyway.

N but N and L O'B - what a surprise, and what a pair!

True facts, N but N, are that this car is far from popular here, was sold in limited numbers, and spares and service facilities are "limited" in comparison with Japanese makes, such as Honda - parts are expensive and are available only from Ford dealers. A car sold privately, without warranty, does not have the same guarantee as one from a main dealer, and this is normally reflected in the price. True facts.

"Vitriolic attacks"? Compared with his own attacks on others who do not post here with whom he has had personal or business dealings, and on Thais and Thailand in general, my comments on JB are positively tame.

L O'B, "give the man a break" - why? "if he says it's a good motor and was his private vehicle then that's what it will be" - that's what he also said about the Toyota Soluna (7 years old, 79,000 kms) he had for sale two months ago! Maybe his is a two car family?

April 26th, 2008, 05:23
Fords are real good cars and I had one for six years that took me all over the States and Canada doing my salesmanship job. I went over 250,000 miles in that ol' Ford and it never let me down because I looked after it and got it serviced and repaired regular like the handbook says.

yes Gone Mad-I think even the members of Sawatdee know that autos purchased pre-loved, privately will not have a warranty but that's hardly the end of the world as we know it !. Bizarrely-it's the same world wide

You need to see someone about your hatred for the Ford motor company..if it's because of that old fascist Henry Ford that founded it I can understand but otherwise I think you may be making a mountain out of a molehill.

Is that what he offered to give you for the car? If so, why didn't you sell it to him?

Or is that he price he would sell it to an unsuspecting farang sucker, after having bought it for the fair price of 385,000?

If you are looking for a vehicle to purchase, I reccommend John's car. He is an established busnessman in the area. I'm sure he will offer some type of warranty so you know you will not be had. John claims no profits will go to Thais for Life but I know John and I'm sure if not most, but all profits will go to Thais for Life.

I'm confused. What "profits" are there when you sell a used car for less than you bought it for?

As for "fair price", I wonder what John would be offered if he took the car to a used car dealer, or a Ford dealership, and asked how much they would give him for it?

You need to see someone about your hatred for the Ford motor company...

You need to see someone about your eyesight - I have no problem with Ford, I simply said this particular model was far from popular here.

I have been advised (By a dealer) that my car was worth 470,000 on the forecourt

Allow for a 10% discount by the dealer, then take off one third for a private sale vs a dealer (the dealer standard here, according to Honda and Toyota), and you have .... 282,000.

I sold (the Toyota) this month as my last rental car. This is my PRIVATE car and as I am returning home I want to sell it too.Understand now dear?

Understood perfectly - this one really is your own car, and it was the other car which was actually ex-rental which you similarly described as "owned by farang since new".

I'm sure he will offer some type of warranty so you know you will not be had

How? He goes home in two months (but you knew that, didn't you?)
