The link from the BBC:

which also states that Thailand is the largest producer of rice.

Yes, these things have even been reported widely in Thai newspapers available online!! Tesco has urged the government to take action - see "On the edge of a crisis" - http://www.bangkokpost.net/topstories/t ... ?id=126890 (http://www.bangkokpost.net/topstories/topstories.php?id=126890) or "Global rice trade slows" - http://www.bangkokpost.net/Business/03Apr2008_biz32.php and this one in The Nation about the release of rice from the national stockpile to alleviate the "crisis" - http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2008/04 ... 069951.php (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2008/04/03/national/national_30069951.php)

There doesn't seem to have been any change in the price of my cow phad at the local shop in my soi, where I enjoy it most days for breakfast. It seems to be remaining stable at 30 Baht. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u152/GeorgeThai/liplick-1.gif

Depends on the vendor and the rice quality. Locally my bf has been buying for some long time jasmine rice for 310 baht (lasts about 2 months) but last week he was charged 440 baht for the same quantity.

I will bear the above information in mind, should I ever have the necessity to order my cow phads in larger quantities. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u152/GeorgeThai/biglaugh.gif

This is probably due to Delia promoting both Basmati and "Thai Rice" in last week's programme. She also suggested the use of frozen rice!

Thailand is further south & has fewer mouths to feed than China, which may explain why it has more rice to export.
For similar reasons, I figure they probably export more than Russia & Canada also.

Corn, wheat and soybeans hitting records. Coffee up. Closer to home boyfriend's mum is hoping to get high prices for her plantings of "Thai Potato" (manoic).
On the flip side step-father is taking a bath on the cows he bought when Thaksin was still around. Livestock is the only thing that's dropping in price as a result of massive herd culling due to the high prices for feed.

Actually I'm the one taking the "bath" since it was my money that bought the damn cows in the first place. Damn scrawny things.....

Some of the data is a few years old, but it gives a good overview.

As of the date of this compilation, Thailand was the world's leading exporter, despite the stagancy in production. It is not the world's leading producer.
