Are they a new phenomenon? What are they?

The term "coyote dancer" somehow was devised to first describe skimpily-dressed girl bar dancers. It's a new term - like the latest hot trend - and now everybody is using it to describe any kind of bar dancer. But the dancers aren't really doing anything or dressing any differently than they did before (although the name does imply that the dancer is actually actively dancing - and that term often didn't apply to a lot of the boys in bars who didn't seem to move much).

Just a new-age term in my view.

There's a new bar in Patong, BB Studio, featuring coyote dancers rather than gogo. It has the same owner as the traditonal gogo bar My Way opposite. In BB Studio the music is louder and harder; the lighting is gloomy; and the dancing is slightly more energetic than in My Way. The boys also tend to accessorise (with chains, leather, etc) to emphasise the raunchier vibe. Several times every evening boys dance outside on a precarious balcony suspended from the front of the bar, which is entertaining when you're sitting at one of the bars opposite.

Overall it's a good attempt to bring some variation from the standard gogo bar to the Phuket scene.

It probably started as a joking reference to the dancers, derived from the old joke defining "coyote ugly" as when a very drunk man takes a lady home for sex, wakes up the next morning with her asleep on his arm, and she is so ugly he chews off his own arm to escape rather than waking her up. The lady was "coyote ugly".

Coyotes are a sort of wild dog found in the American west, which is said to chew off it's own leg to escape when it gets a leg caught in a bear trap.

My first contact with male coyote dancers was at Maya in Walking Street last year.

They were fully clothed and the music and the dancing was described as extreme high energy. I felt sure they could not keep up their act for longer than 10 minutes without a break. Each dancer was different and it was an expression IMHO of the personalities of each dancer. Some were overtly sexual with lots of crutch thrusting, others were more hand and arm movements, all with a lot of body action.

Several did not move their feet and with all a lot of head shaking. The nights I was there it seemed that anyone could get onto a podium and do his act. I wondered if they were paid or doing it for their own enjoyment. It was suggested that the dancers at Maya were off duty waiters,bar boys whatever dancing for their own enjoyment, not to get offed. It was not non stop as in go go bars, but every hour or so. When the music changed boys seemed to appear onto the podiums

I have a straight friend that has seen girl coyote acts in BKK. The movements are similar but the girls are scantily clothed,
often with a cowgirl or leather theme and if not topless then their breast were hanging out.

I am in two minds whether I would like to see coyote wearing less clothes. If the boys at Maya are not employed and the boys just doing it for fun, some could drop out, if asked to wear less. Maybe a competition with cash prizes for coyote wearing underpants or thongs once a night, might be a good compromise.

I doubt if the Birdcage coyote is similar but will have to wait until I can see for myself.

This is true, and the saying was popularized with the "Coyote Ugly" movie (which came out in Y2K)..and THEN there was a chain of "Coyote Ugly" bars ..not sure if they still exist but I made the mistake of attending a gathering at the Coyote Ugly in Dallas..hated the place, too many girls there:-)
