"Taxi sir?

One of the tricks when arriving at Suv airport in Bangkok is to go upstairs to departures
and take an incoming taxi instead of lining up downstairs.

But there are not only incoming taxies at departures, but also taxi mafia.
I didnтАЩt realise this, but it makes sense as it explains some of the problems I have had.

I owe the following to a poster named Briggs at thaivisa.com:

There are some common characteristics of taxi mafia around Bangkok and the airport is a
big hub for them as there are lots of juicy newbie farangs, khaeks, nips and jeks to fleece.

Watch out for mad jabbering in English. They will continue to do this even if the
passenger demonstrates fluency in Thai. This is a telltale sign. ..

Although you can catch a taxi on the departure floor, I don't recommend it. The traffic control officers move them along as many do try to wait for a rider. Sometimes the police redirect you to the lines if it's obvious that your looking for a taxi.

I did it once and the driver said get in fast before police see you and he took off and the meter was turned not on, it was also covered by a towel. Then he said 500B flat rate. We could not get out he was going fast and we were on the elevated road. The BF argued and talked him down to 300.

Two other farangs and one Thai told me the same thing happen to them catching a taxi from departures.

The lines on arrivals, second floor, moves very fast.

I invariably go to departure area. there will be guys wanting to take your bags and guys hanging around their cabs. These are all no meter types. Just say no and head for a taxi which has just come in (driver behind wheel). I have never had one of those refuse a meter fare

from the arrivals area, officially, from the meter stand, surely that's the best way isn't it

Problems encountered:
1. 50 baht surchage
2. Line ups
3. Taxis with fast moving meters............encountered twice

Go to the arrivals area and less likely to be thought of as a naive new tourist
