View Full Version : Barking Mad?

February 7th, 2008, 18:54
ItтАЩs a tragedy but the Manager has been sacked from Manhattans Steak House, one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet, with many years restaurant experience under his belt around the worldтАжтАж. He was told, the owners want to change direction away from the Managers direction, so they will no longer need his services, as they know he will not agree with their New ideas. Normally this would not be a problem, fair enough a business decision OK, until you hear exactly why they want to change direction, the English owners from Barking London UK, I was Informed, it would seem, allegedly, they had a lot of complaints, from many their straight "mates" from the Sportsman Pub, Soi 134, and others, who say they would eat there if,тАж it was not so up market (Translated, beyond their budget) and they donтАЩt want to eat with so many obviously gay guys on many of the tables.

Funny enough next door in Marta Harri Restaurant, we have Luis the Owner, who I have known for many years and he has survived nicely with Gay clientele, and also loves it when they arrive, makes such a fuss of you, he is one of the lads, if you was gay or straight, I cant imagine any one cutting out any customers, if they are constant and respectful, so it must be the price, the reason they feel they are not getting there fair share of Customers, last time I was there recently the bill was over 3000 baht per person, and has never been less, even so I did not begrudge one baht, as the ambiance was nice, company wonderful, with good food, very a good quality wine list. it was perfect, itтАЩs also a shame. because the Manager has given so much time and energy. into making sure this restaurant, is the Best in Town with all his 30 years in the business. Now he is looking for another venue, to put on the map as the perfect place to dine..in Pattaya.

Even though there is the Mata Hari next door, where the prices are comparable I think they have more on the menu for those on a more of a budget. But some do not think so as the wines, can run up on the bill, on any Gourmet menu, but for a special occasion, its nice to have a splash out. I personally love MANTRA Restaurant, its not one but 5 restaurants, where you can pick from Japanese, Indian or Italian, French or Thai menus. ItтАЩs the first Los Angeles type restaurant in North Pattaya, over the road, on the other side of the Dusit Hotel, actually in the Asia Hotel.

Of course you donтАЩt have to spend a fortune to eat but it helps, my other favorites are

"they donтАЩt want to eat with so many obviously gay guys on many of the tables."

I'm always under the table anyway-halfway during the evening. All that meat is terribly unhealthy. F**K Manahattans..just go to Mata Hari..much nicer for swish queens like us.

TIT Bits; LMTU; ear wig etc etc

I'm amazed that you are able to con so many people out of money to satisfy your expensive tastes.
Spending 3000 Bt at a restaurant instead of paying the people you've conned seems very distasteful.
Had an e-mail from one of your creditors tonight, its only 20,000 Bt. Why don't you pay him back.
Perhaps you would be better to eat off the streets for a while and get this off your back because you obviously don't have any spine. !!!!!

IF that is really the true reason for the sacking the answer is simple. All gays should permanently avoid frequenting the place. That would show the owners just how important the 'pink pound' is to their livelihood.

February 7th, 2008, 21:27
Rome Club in Bangkok made the same mistake and went out of business. The pink baht is very powerful.

I could have sworn when I ate there about 2 weeks after the grand opening, the gentlemen who was walking

around saying hello to everyone was the owner and was American, not English.

I remember specifically the credit card machine was not working and you had to pay cash or wash dishes for a

month if you didn't have the cash on you.

They say the memory is one of the first things to go.

Oh, now what was it I was going to say?

Damn.

February 7th, 2008, 22:02
the English owners from Barking London UK [/b].

This is a very revealing fact

Barking is in Essex, a county in England (to the immediate east of London), not renowned for it's sophistication or love of all things gay

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p ... =essex+boy (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=essex+boy)

I wonder what the american equivalent of an essex boy/essex girl is? I suspect it's a distinctly British phenomenon

I and many others thought the American was the owner - but chatting about this with friends it appears he was the manager ... and a very good one too.
The man did a fantastic job; put his heart and soul into the project and made it a real pleasure to eat there. I have been there several times with small and large parties and it was a really welcoming but also a professional atmosphere that Mr. T managed to engender into the place. Outstanding food and wines; attentive staff; great atmosphere. And now he's sacked - there's thanks for doing a good job!
The gay community poured their money into this restaurant and now we are pariahs.
Like many others, I shall not be eating there again until there is some clarification about this seemingly homophobic pronouncement.

How 'bout Trailer Trash

Like many others, I shall not be eating there again until there is some clarification about this seemingly homophobic pronouncement.

I know none of those involved (the restaurant, the owners, the (ex?)manager, or those posting about it), and my partner would think I was mad if I spent 6,000 baht + on a dinner for two, however this and similar "pronouncements" here need to be put into perspective.

There was no "seemingly homophobic pronouncement" by anyone, least of all the owners. Even the original poster said that it was as "I was informed, it would seem, allegedly" - no more. Unless the owners comment on if and why the manager was sacked, which would be both unnecessary and probably in no-one's interests, it is no more than unpleasant gossip.

The only people who "poured their money into this restaurant" were the owners - all others, apparently, simply got value for money.

To say that the "gay community" will be treated as "pariahs" by the owners or the staff is premature at best. To withdraw your custom based on a rumour on a website, even by a 100% reputable poster, is as asinine as expecting "some clarification" by the owners of their target clientele, views of gay customers, etc.

" ...ItтАЩs a tragedy but the Manager has been sacked from Manhattans Steak House ... "
This is a 'tragedy'?
Sorry to appear cold. but really, the phrase " ... who cares ... ?" seems much more appropriate.

Cheers ....

The poster who brags about dining in expensive up-scale restaurants would rather pay the loans back he owes to various people. Posting an elite restaurant guide while refusing to pay off his debts shows his unscrupulousness. :sad1:

From this, i ask 'jaidee454' are you one of his victims ??
Thus is exactly what I have been saying many times in these forums. The poster LMTU, ear wig, TIT Bits etc etc owes money all round town and maybe further afield.
Its deception any way you look at it and people need to be warned about JB and his fraudulant stories. He even tries to con people out of money by using stories about a boy that died recently. How low can you go.
About time he got his just deserves.
Mind you, he's not the only one that does this in Pattaya. !!!

Yes, in fact I am one of his victims. Had there been a post before revealing his fraudulant behaviour, I had been warned in time and wouldn't have trusted him.
I understand that many people have been conned so far by that guy JB alias LMTU, ear wig, TIT Bits etc. Therefore I think it may prevent other people from making the same mistake...
N.B. those "posters" who raise their voice as loud as they can demanding the deletion of revealing information like this are likely to be other identities of that guy. He has arguably a vital interest in the deletion of such post as they harm his "business" (meaning his conning other people)...

For the record the "JB" in this post is not John Botting.

I am positive John that you were not even thought of as being the guilty person

Remember what you hear here in private, is not the same as you hear in a "booth"

Yes, the dictionary says a "Booth" is a stall at a fair or market.
This "Booth" is a stall that con's you into leaving money and it's not fair at all. :bounce:

I would say i am in the majority of the people who read this forum (over 1000 hits on this topic alone) and we know nothing about the people who claim someone conned them, someone owes them money etc etc.

Could I politely suggest that either someone enlightens we in the masses with what exactly went on, or just sticks to the thread topic of Manhattan's alleged sacking of a gay manager, and desire to turn the restaurant into a straighter dining experience.

All these claims and counter claims are so boring if only a select few knows the coded names in question.

Finally, you are all grown men, how do u get yourselves into these situations - a western grown up farang needing money on holiday sounds like a pitfall most of know how to avoid......if this person has made a habit of it, and each and every story can be corroborated, then the least the majority of us deserve is a naming and shaming (in a different thread), so those who fall more easily for sob-stories can be warned in advance......
