The BF and I flew into the new Krabi Airport on Nok Air from Don Muang. It's a short one hour flight and Nok was running a promotion, we got two RT tickets for 6000B. We used a rental car company called Krabi Rental (http://krabidir.com/krabicarrental/index.htm) on-line and arranged for a Honda Jazz for the week at 1,300 per day. Budget in the airport charges 1,700B per day. Someone from Krabi Car rental met us at arrivals and a fairly new Honda Jazz was parked at the curb ready for us.

We spent the week at Somkiet Buri Resort (http://www.somkietburi.com/). We had to take a pool side room at 3,500B as the place was fully booked. The place is nestled in a beautiful garden with a walk way that meanders around waterfalls and fishponds. It had a very private feel to it. You only really saw other guests if they came out to the pool or at breakfast. One of the cute pool boys was flirtatious with me when no one else was around.

Krabi attracts a family crowd of mostly Europeans and mostly from the Scandinavian countries. Not as many Germans as in Hua Hin and Samui and very few from native English speaking countries. The blond and blue eyes brigade parades up and down beach road from dusk to early evening. Many younger families with small children. They are polite enough and just seem to ignore me and the BF. I did not notice one gay farang with a Thai BF anywhere or a tourest that even appeared gay.

If there is any gay life in Krabi, I did not find it. First, I tried to book at Ao Nang Pearl, a gay hotel, and I had read some good reviews but I got no response from the web site booking page.aonangpearl.com/ (http://aonangpearl.com/) I called and got a recording in German, left a message and got no response. I even left a message in German using my one semester German and that did not work either. The current edition of Thai Phun has three gay bars listed for Krabi with no address. The bars are very low profile, I found two areas where there are small beer type bars, one is very hidden behind a series of tourist shops and the other area off a side road. I did find two of the listed bars and they were open style beer type bars and both had no customers and no boys, one did have a lady boy behind the bar sleeping. They were next to a few lady beer bars where there were a total of two customers in all the bars and about 15 or so ladies all combined. Bottom line, if you visit Krabi, BYOB.

I had last been to Krabi about 8 years ago. I was very surprised to see the level of development of Ao Nang, I hardly recognized the place. There was only one small commercial strip on Beach road then and very few people. Now, it's very much like Phuket. When I stayed there 8 years ago there were only two upscale resorts and a hand full of cheaper hotels on Ao Nang, now I could not count all the hotels. Development seemed to have went in every direction. A whole new section of beach with all new hotels in three different directions from the original main road. Railey beach is pretty much unchanged, it had upscale resorts then and it's still there, no big changes.

On my last trip, I did all the usual island and beach tours via long tail boats. Back then you could rent a boat and driver all day for 800B. Now, it's organized, there are middle men, a ticket office and "an association" and it's 1,700B for 4 hours but boat taxi service to Railey and other beaches are only 40B. We got lost one day and stumbled on beach called Khlong Sai, north of Ao Nang. It's off the Euro tourist haunts and at this beach you just negotiate with the boat driver and for 1000B you have the boat all day for touring, diving, snorkeling or whatever.

Driving around the Province we stumbled on signs for Ao Luk sea caves while looking for Boke Kanornee National park. We had a map of Krabi but many of the attractions in the Province had one name on the map, another on the sign and a third when you got there. English maps don't match the Thai maps and Ao Nang in Thai is Aoprahanang. Ao Luk, also off the tourist circuit, is a set of limestone caves in a mangrove forest accessible only by kayak. You have to take a guide along with all the necessary gear and a kayak for 500B per person. If your hotel arranges a tour, it's 1,500 per person but we just drove up on our own. Very impressive caves and the calm inland mangrove waterway made paddling easy.

We did eventually find Boke National park as well as two other parks, Khao Phanam Bencha and Thanboke Khorane. Again the names on the map do not match the signs but we just went in the general direction and ended up somewhere. I get the feeling that Krabi province is growing so fast that maps can't keep up with the development.

Krabi tourist don't stray far from the beaches. We saw very few tourists at all the inland National Parks and Marine Parks to the north of Ao Nang.

Food in Ao Nang is all overpriced and flavored for farangs. In Krabi town, there are many decent options at a fraction of Ao Nang prices.

Traffic was light most every where, from Ao Nang to Krabi Town and in the Province. Roads excellent. The hoards of Euro tourist seem to just stay in beach area resorts, don't rent cars or motorcycles and just walk around. There is a new white large bus that goes to town, to the airport and to Tesco as well as those motocy tuk-tuks but I don't know what it cost. I did notice transportation billboards, 400 to 700 for the airport and 100 for some other near by locations. There are signs but not clearly marked and at night hard to find the right road and again the route numbers on the map I had did not match the road signs.

Thanks for much for that report, TrongpaiExpat. Krabi is definitely now on my list of places to visit.

Nice report TPE. It accords very much with my experience of Krabi several years ago. The tourist demographic is very different to the usually haunts of Sawatdee denizens. No gay life to speak of. And few straight farang-Thai couples either. The Euro tourists get a very sanitized view of the 'real' Thailand ! :-)

The scenery is spectacular, but the beach at Ao Nang itself is not that nice. You basically have to get a long boat to one of the Railay beaches , Ao Tong Sai (sp? ... where the rock climbers and hippys go I think), hire your own long boat to do the islands, or take a song taew to the next beach along the coast, Ao Noparrat Thara - simple Thai picnic area well along the road with sellers parked beside the road bringing food to the narrow beach.

Making the most of Krabi does depend on doing a bit of homework beforehand, otherwise one could end doing what you saw most of the tourists doing, walking up and down beach road and paying too much for various tours.

We stayed on beach road at Ao Nang for about 1800 in off season (now 2000). The deluxe rooms are actually bungalows separate from the ritzier main block, which I thought were not bad for the price.
http://www.aonangprinceville.com/

As you say, food is overpriced on the beach strip. We found that the little Thai restaurants back up the hill on the feeder road were cheaper and better.

We took a first class train to Surat Thani and then bussed it to Krabi. That was fun but I don't think I'd do it again (the bus bit). Luckily there are now cheap flight options.

BTW, my interest in Krabi was sparked by the first series of the Amazing Race which visited there, and is now out on DVD. Watch out for the notorious gay Team Guido.

I almost forgot to mention ... my bf was rather 'impressed' with some of the young farang talent. Fortunately, they were totally unavailable. :-)

Thanks for the nice report Trongpai.

But when you say....

...when was the last time you went to Phuket?

I visit frequently and was there in March 2007, but when I last visited at new year 2008 I was amazed at the rate of development in Patong. The Northern part of Thaveewong road is now fully developed and the new shops and restaurants are busy. It seems to me that every landowner along the beach road that may have been effected by the Tsunami has suddenly found the money to develop his site, even if there was no previous development.

I wonder if the same funds for development have been 'found' in Ao Nang?

when was the last time you went to Phuket?

About 6 months ago. I remember Patong from the 80's and watched the development up to the tsunami and then post tsunami development. The post tsunami side walk in Phuket is the same one in Ao Nang.

The development in Ao Nang to me seemed explosive where as the development in Phuket seemed slower. There's still more being built. In town now there's a big Tesco center and next to that a Big C Super Center is being built.

Now they seem to have imported sand to Ao Nong for somewhat of a sandy beach. It used to be small rocks and mud. No beach chairs and concessions yet? Now, it's mats only and shade provided by trees that were planted.

The only up side of all this development is that the supply of quality hotels seems to have exceeded demand and you get a lot for your baht. I paid a lot more 8 years ago when there where only two quality resorts on Ao Nong.

If you have an option of what airport in Bangkok to use for a domestic flight I would choose old Don M., it's fast and efficent but not so pretty. Also, the free bus to MRT still runs every 30 min.

Trongpai...

Thanks for the trip report.

I've been considering a trip to Krabi for quite some time, although never ran into anyone who had experienced it.

The swimming pool looks delicious, although the resort you staying at may be a little too upscale for my bf. I thought he'd love the luxury at the Aou Prao Resort on Koh Samet, but learned (over time) that he would much have preferred a cheap shack on the other side of the island near the Thai food stalls and the rustics of the inner island town folks.

BTW...how long was your stay?

Thanks again.

Mai Pen Rai. We stayed for 5 nights.

Somkiet Buri was not so upscale that the staff were all falling over you. It's very private, he might like it. There's many other options for 500B to 1000B but finding them on the Internet might be a problem. They look like walk in and ask places, they are all over Ao Nang and the surrounding roads to and from Ao Nang.

I would recommend staying in Railay for a romantic break. The Rayavadee hotel is just stunning. Each room is an individual two storey pavilion with private garden and outside jacuzzi or pool. The hotel is accessible by boat only - a private white motor launch with uniformed staff will collect you from the mainland so you arrive in style. The hotel restuarants are superb - the Thai restaurant probably the best I've ever experienced. Built over the ocean, it is reminiscent of Baan Rim Pa in Phuket. Of the three Railay beaches, two are out of this world - Phranang beach in particular is idyllic. The whole Railay area with the sheer limestone cliffs rising sheer out of the water is just beautiful. The Rayavadee is expensive but worth every penny. Other hotels are available around the Railay beaches, some very inexpensive.

The Rayavadee is indeed expensive ... 20,000 to 120,000 THB a night expensive ! I do know someone who spent their honeymoon there. Their pool is right on the beach. They have guards posted to keep the riff raff out.

When booking the other Railay hotels, one needs to think carefully whether you really want to struggle with your luggage on and off a long boat to get there, and then have to get a boat every time you want to go to Ao Nang. I think it's probably better to stay at Ao Nang and get a boat if you want to swim at Railay.

On gaybuttonthai in a discussion on phuket the resort of Ao Nang was mentioned. I went to search and found this thread I wonder if there is any more recent reports.
I also found this link for the rainbow bar which looks great

Thanks for your great report. My BF Ben and I and his whole family visited Krabi last December. Asia Air often has specials wherein one pays a $20 USD tax for a RT tix which is what we did. My BF and his brother treated me and his family to a great week there in Krabi. Scenery is breathtaking.
Like you, we found Krabi to be a delightful family endeavor. There was one gay bar near a gas station but limited activity.
We also enjoyed the intown Krabi eateries and found the food to be reasonable and excellent.
We stayed at Red Ginger, a chic resort, and the price included a full **** breakfast. The salt water pool was sweet as well as the loft apartments we rented at the resort.
You are right about the airport! Great.
A hot natural mineral springs is nearby and is a delight.

Ben and I met up with five gay guys from Spain - they were really fun to hang out with.

For anyone wanting to have a change from the over stimulated nightlife of Pattaya, Krabi is a great get-away, relaxed, fun, and comfortable.

I have only been to Krabi once and it was just a quick pass through on our way to Phuket by boat from Railay Bay. We had traveled that day from Nakhon Si Thammarat to Krabi to Phuket. I was bloody nackered. We should have stayed over in Krabi for a couple of days. Live and learn.

Thanks for the trip report Tronpai.

Some great reports on Krabi above. Looks stunning.

Anyone been to Krabi recently?

Any other suggestions of places to stay, things to do or things to watch out for in Krabi?

Any suggestions on scheduled trips or hiring a boat out to do some snorkeling etc.?

Ao Nang Beach seems to be the main beach to stay on, very picturesque with lots of hotels and amenities.

Anyone stayed at the Centara Grand Beach Resort in Krabi? Looks awesome with rooms overlooking the ocean and hot tubs on balconies... http://www.centarahotelsresorts.com/ckb ... efault.asp (http://www.centarahotelsresorts.com/ckbr/ckbr_default.asp) ?

There is this new invention called the internet, perhaps you have heard of it?
It has things called search engines that you an use to find out useful information on a wide variety of topics.
With a few simple key strokes you can find all the information you could possibly want.
Here are some examples of the results of a search on travel in Krabi.

Evidently the poster above doesn't see message boards as a place to ask questions and discuss personal experiences, only as a place to attack and belittle other posters (as over 80% his posts do).

Back to the topic...

Evidently the poster above is too lazy to do a little basic research himself and would rather have everyone else do it for him.

Beachbore, with all this Google information you've ammased about Krabi, you could have just turned it into a trip report, much like all your others!
