Tata Motors of India has unveiled the world's cheapest motor car and reports say the Indian firm is likely to build and sell the 82,500-baht auto in Thailand.

The four-door Tata Nano was shown on Thursday at India's biggest car show in the capital, New Delhi. It sells for 100,000 rupees, or $2,500.

The four-door five-seater car, which goes on sale later this year, has a 33bhp, 624cc, engine at the rear. It has no air conditioning, no electric windows and no power steering, but two deluxe models will be on offer.

Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata has dropped strong hints to the Indian media that he expects to make and market the car in Thailand.

According to the Times of India, Tata told reporters at the auto show that, "The car could do well in Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia."

Asked specifically if he intended to make the Nano at a planned new assembly plant at the "Detroit of Asia" in Rayong in the future, Tata refused to comment.

Tata said several countries have shown interest in building the car. "I can't name these countries now but two of them have shown firm interest," he said.

But it is known that the Indian firm is in advanced talks to set up a plant in Rayong to produce a so-called eco-car which will be heavily subsidised by various industrial and tax incentives.

The companyтАЩs most recent joint venture was with Thonburi Automotive in 2006, to manufacture and market pick-up trucks in Thailand. The project will produce 35,000 1-ton trucks a year, to be sold in the domestic market.

Last week, Forbes magazine reported on its website that a spokesperson for Tata Motors had confirmed plans for a project in Thailand but refused to reveal any details. The report said that Tata Motors plans to invest around $200 million and roll out 100,000 cars annually from Thailand, where it could create an auto components hub around the small car. Thank goodness there is plenty of road space!

a cheap car good idea but there are small Suzuki's cars very popular in Europe and small Honda's, Citroen's, Mazda's and Ford but most Thais go for big cars... rather no car unless it is a big car Driving in a cheap car is like admitting they do not have big money (losing face) only the over one million bath Mini Cooper is acceptable

Heaven forbid that there should be even more cars on Thailand's roads! The amount of imported fuel burnt, the damage to the environment, the road deaths.

The country desperately needs better public transport, not the free-for-all that we see, which is amazingly inefficient in resource usage, like motorcycle taxis which can only take passengers one way, due to the mafia.

Alas, I don't see it as within the nature of Thai society to do much better than what we see.

Seems the car is not intended for Thailand according to this news article

Around noon on January 10, the massive Tata Motors pavilion at the Pragati Maidan would be the place to be, if you are a chronicler of history or an industry specialist or just a plain automotive enthusiast. At that time Ratan Tata will take the covers off the Tata people's car which has been dominating mindspace both inside and outside the industry for its sheer concept and execution since the better part of a decade.

The obvious need to provide a more stable, safe and protective set of basic transportation at an affordable price point to the Indian masses who prefer to be astride a two-wheeler was what got the Tata car project going in 1997. The genesis for this car took in a lakh as inspiration, one hundred thousand rupees being the target selling point and the team went to work, conjuring up an all weather car with seating for four and with a modicum of performance allied to low operating costs.

Bad idea. We used up all the oil with cars, now you want to use up all the sunshine with them too!! We'll all starve because there won't be enough sunshine to grow crops.
