I confess that I knew very little about Sir Edmund Hillary until reading the obituaries. I knew nothing of his extensive philanthropic work in Nepal, for instance, or his refusal to acknowledge that he was first to set foot on the summit of Everest until long after Tensing's death. He was clearly a great man, humble as well as determined and adventurous, and all New Zealanders can feel justly proud of him.

We certainly do. They are laying on a state funeral. We've only ever had two in living memory.
