I would like to type Thai script on my computer but I am having trouble activating Thai fonts.

I have downloaded several Thai fonts onto to my computer then pput them into the Windows Font folder. I have gone to the "Control Panel" to "Fonts" and ""Add New Font".

When I open a new page in Microsoft Word I can find the new font listed in Fonts but when I type with any of these new fonts, they all come out as English script.

What am I doing wrong? I have tried many free download sites all with the same results. One came with instructions that I followed but still no Thai.

Doug, you alse need to install the extra keyboard language. Not sure what OS you are using, but go to Control Panel and open Regional and Language Options (thats what its called in Vista, cant remember exactly what its called in XP). Then open \'Keyboards and Languages tab, Change Keyboards option, then Add. You will get a list of keyboards, just find the Thai one in the list. You may need the XP disc to install it, I cant recall.
Sorry cant be more exact, but this should get you looking in the right area.

Depends on which version of word and windows you are using.

To prove you have installed the fonts correctly, you can open a new word document, set the font to Thai, and then use insert symbol to put in Thai characters one at a time.

If you want to actually type Thai, thgen you will need to go to control panel/regional settings and set up a Thai input locale, and also maybe enable the language under MS Office/tools/Language settings (This for MS office pro 2003)

You should then have a language icon in systray which will default to EN for English but you can use to switch to Thai

Of course, it also helps to have a Thai keyboard.

Hope this helps

There is no need to buy a Thai keyboard. Just get a sheet of 'sticky' labels that have both Thai and English characters and stick them on to the keys of the keyboard. There is a colour to suit your keyboard. Has worked for me for years. Then you can learn to type with one of the many programs available. Great fun.
