"Bikini Killer" Sobhraj wants to return to France
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - "Bikini Killer" Charles Sobhraj has said he plans to return to France if Nepal's Supreme Court strikes down his life sentence for killing an American backpacker more than 30 years ago in a verdict expected next month.
The French national, who has been accused by police in a number of Asian countries of killing more than 20 western travelers, has been in a Kathmandu jail since he was arrested about four years ago as he gambled in a local casino.

If you have followed the career of Sobhraj you would know that he murdered several backpacking girls in Thailand..although police suspect he may have killed up to a dozen more young visitors to Thailand.

All this was revealed in a book by Richard Neville (The Life & Crimes of Charles Sobhraj) many years ago. Neville is an old acquaintance of mine from our hippy days in London where I attended his obscenity trial-now being made into a film by the BBC. I always remember the judge's summing-up that included-"we heard from a strange swarthy man from Malta who attempted to illuminate us about his new theories on thinking which I believe was pure nonsense and should be forgotten"..that witness was a very young Edward de Bono who seems to have survived while the old beak has passed into distant history.

Neville calls himself a "futurist"..whatever the hell that means but I always though he was more like Joyce Grenfell..very jolly hockey sticks-quite a nice chap who used his experience as an advertising copy writer to create a "controversial "career . ( he wrote adverts for toilet paper)

But the gist of this rambling is-Sobhraj was interviewed by Neville for weeks in Bangkok and Pattaya jails and when the book was finally released he was furious. He vowed revenge on Neville and said if he ever got free from jail he intended to track Neville down-cut out his tongue, slice off his ears, gouge out his eyes and then slit his throat.

Neville has never been back to Thailand as the experience was just too much for him. I saw him on a visit to London just a few weeks ago after Germaine Greer called him "the worst writer of the '60's era"..and he was planning a trip to France to give some talks.

I wonder if I should tell him that Sobhraj may be there..then again perhaps I should tell Sobhraj that Neville will be in France-I do like Germaine and she's usually correct about most things.

After a party Peter Cook offered her a lift home. She replied, "No thanks, I fucked you after the last party and you were useless."
