We will be in Pattaya for three or four days over Christmas. Not being serious beach-goers, we have always seemed to be looking for something to do during the day.

Appreciate any suggestions for things to do in Pattaya during the day including day trips to nearby attractions (temples and other places of interest).

Thanks!

Try going to www.pattaya.com (http://www.pattaya.com) and look at the home page for Day Time. Many ideas there including some links to sites

I just returned and asked the same question of guys I met.

Ferry Boat to island. I did not do it, but was told by a man and his BF that an interesting day trip is to leave the big pier by Walking Street and go out to some nearby island. Apparently good area to walk around with plenty of shops and places to eat. Perhaps someone that knows more about this can provide details.

A big Buddah and shrines. At the top of the hill going toward Jomptien. A Naval office is there as well with a walk around area just down from the big Buddah. My local boy of the previous night hailed one of the motorbikes and we were driven up with all three cramed on one bike. A number of smaller buddahs and shrines make it interesting for an hour or two. Always more bikes and taxis (even the baht taxis) were available for the return.

My info may be out of date, but here's a couple I enjoyed.

Nong Nooch gardens. Ought to be nice weather for it. A pretty large cultivated garden area with lots of paths to walk and admire the plants. Plenty of places to get refreshments as well. It may sound lame, but I found it impressive.

Never miss a chance to go to the water park/tower well past the gay beach area of Jomtien. Ride up to the top in a trolley and come down the same way, or by being attached to another wire for the adventurous. Great views of Pattaya from up there and a sweet ocean breeze.

Sorry..I don't know the name or location, but there is a museum not far from town that houses lots of Buddhist, historical and mythological artifacts including dozens of larger than life full-figure statues. It closes early-ish, but it's worth it to be there near closing time for photo-opping with the long shadows.

I've always wanted to charter a boat for some deep sea fishing, but the closest I've come was to go to a 'fishing park' and hook some big ones that way. I don't think they let you eat your catch, but they will cook up a great fish dinner with all the trimmings. There are at least 2 of these around Pattaya...one is down a soi running perpendicular to the street at Jomtien. You'll never see it from the road, but a few questions around should get you there.

One nobody ever seems to mention is just getting on a baht bus and crusing around the city. It's a great way to get your bearings and a good view of life street level. Cheap too.

Brett 1 ,

Do not worry at all, you will have plenty to do.

I should imagine your Hotel will be swamped with brochures of trips and days.

It is not like Bangkok, I have found.

[ Bangkok] No business to do, Why are you staying up there, after the temples and floating market etc. A very warm concrete boring city.

Great the first time for sure!

However, if you are really lucky you could bump into Homintern!

Like Khun Dawit said, Nong Nooch Gardens is a pretty pleasant place to spend a few hours.

Viharna Sien also is worth seeing. Tons of bronze statuary set up in an almost chinese-looking temple.

Buddha mountain is okay, maybe stop there on the way back from Nong Nooch or Viharna Sien.

Although you said you're not a beach person, the beaches on the west side of Koh Larn are rather nice (don't worry, lots of vendors over there at least on the largest two beaches) and the 40 minute ferry ride over is fun too.

Couple photos of Nong Nuch Tropical Gardens:

And a couple of photos of Viharna Sien (second photo is my favorite bronze statue there....)

How about the tiger zoo. Is it worth a visit? Reports are it has 200 tigers - can this be true? What is the best way to get there and how long does it take from Pattaya?

www.man-goes.net (http://www.man-goes.net), a small Guesthouse website has interesting links of local attractions close to them.

I'd avoided the Pattaya Floating Market since it first openned, but was dragged thre by some Thai friends recently. I was pleasantly surprised. It's a large venue split into sectons - one for north Thailand, one for south Thaiand, ove for Isaan and another for Central Thailand. Each section is loaded with shops specializing in handicrafts and foods from the region. There is also miniperformances of local dancing and costumes. Admittedly, it is designed for the tourist, but 99% of those tourists appear to be Thais. It was crowded, but a welcome surprise and one I will take out of country visitors when they come to Thailand. It's located just south of Soi Chaiyaprok (spelling??) on Sukhumvit. It's worth a look.

What's up with responding to a post almost 3 years old? Do spam Bots do this? It happens quite often, some posters respond and don't notice the date.

**************************
Tiger zoo , in my opinion, should be boycotted. This privately owned park looks like it is on its last leg. (I am sure it is owned by some Chinese family that basically pockets the profit as much as possible instead of keeping the maintenance up to snuff) The place has a gloomy, worn out look to it. And though the tigers are beautiful creatures to look at, their "accommodations" are quite bleak. I couldn't figure out how the place stays in business, but it receives large bus tours of Chinese and Koreans.

No, it is not true. The place is a typical Thai 'show' - i.e. tourist trap, where they will even have the impudence to charge you the usual exorbitant tourist price specially reserved for foreigners. If you want to see tigers safely try San Diego Zoo and don't waste your money supporting this sham.
