I will be in Bangkok over Christmas and have been trying to find out [Bangkok Post, The Nation web sites...no info] what are the public holidays during the Thailand election, and which, if any, days are alcohol-free [it rather detracts fron those wonderful Christmas dinners at Chesa].

Does anyone know, or is it decided one day before?

No alcohol on election day, which usually runs from the night before, so the night of the 22nd and all of the 23rd until usual closing time that night (ie. 2am on the 24th) will be alcohol-free. Welcome to this year's High Season

"The Bank of Thailand Thursday announced that December 24 will be a special holiday for banks and financial institutions.

Earlier, the Cabinet announced that December 24 would be an extra holiday for civil servants and state enterprise employees.

The BOT reasoned that December 24 would be a bank holiday to encourage people to return to their home provinces to vote on December 23 in line with the government's policy."

I have now been told by a couple of leading stand-alone restaurants [outside of hotels] who say they are serving alcohol every night this time, saying if need be they will pay the fines although also say they already pay enough to the police. Enjoying a fine meal with wine is hardly the same as inciting a riot from a small drunken bar!

Thais are supposed to be tolerant of other religions, it is rather normal to entertain your friends over Christmas. Many only get a short holiday break. Maybe they are saying do NOT come to Thailand for your Christmas holiday but go to Singapore and spend your money there instead!
