His Armies of the Night always a favourite book from my student days.
Not sure if he drank or screwed himself to death (both activities were high on his list), but he was a grand old curmudgeon in his later years, not always making the best sense in the world, but he didn't suffer fools gladly and didn't give a shit as to who knew it. I loved watching his craggy, red-nosed old face smile in the last TV interview I saw . . . which was in fact quite a long time ago.
Hadn't heard much of him lately . . . as I guess, he lay dying.
