Protesters last attempt to stop construction of Tesco Express Store in Eastern Pattaya.

At Pattaya City Hall on Wednesday Morning, more than 50 people from the Neun Pleub Wan community protested against a new Tesco Express Convenience Store which is under construction in Soi Neun Pleub Wan in the Eastern outskirts of Pattaya. Local market vendors and store owners believed this new Tesco Store will ruin their businesses as they will not be able to compete with Tesco and the range of products they will offer at the location. The store is almost completed and is set to open soon, and this protest was seen as a last attempt by local community members. The protest was acknowledged by Khun Niran, the Mayor of Pattaya who explained to Protesters that the papers relating to the new business were correct and in accordance with the Law. He could order construction to stop for a short time pending a further enquiry; however this would not prevent the business from opening and would only delay the inevitable.
The Protesters then made their way to Banglamung Police Station to officially register the complaint. Police received the papers which included a petition and duly noted the protest in their records; however it does appear that the protesters will be powerless to prevent this new store from opening.
