I am off to Sri Lanka next month staying in Negombo and Galle. I have done the usual internet searches and it seems that gay scene/activity is pretty much underground, so I just wondered whether any of the well travelled board members had been there and had any information or advice to pass on.

Thanks

Despite the situation described above, there are quite a few guys in Sri lanka advertising for contacts on Gaydar.

Do you think it is a good idea to draw attention to gays advertising on Gaydar in a public forum such as this so that the infamous "Sex Crimes Unit" can draw a bead on them too? I can see the logic of that. The SCU knows all about SGT and are avid readers of its every post, but have never heard of Gaydar - that low profile site. Yes, that makes a lot of sense

I would be more cautious in giving too much information out such as this in a country that persecutes and imprisons us.

Dumbest post of the week. Congratulations!

Being Fearful and Boldly Gay
in Sri Lanka

Intro: Sri Lanka is a war torn culture that offers modest convenience to lesbigay citizens thanks to the activism of a courageous few. To be sure many LGBT citizens live in closeted misery but more recently voices of equality and respect have become louder. Being traditionally Buddhist there is little fear of overt homophobic violence yet archaic colonialist anti-gay laws still apply.

"Colombo - Air Force personnel manning a security checkpoint in Sri Lanka's capital fired warning shots Sunday to halt the vehicle of a German embassy staffer police said.

The security personnel fired only warning shots. 'We have carried out a security check and the vehicle was carrying two people, a foreign national and a local.' The local was taken for further interrogation of other involvements."

Gay web users in Sri Lanka have become a target for police who patrol the Internet highway.

Internet-surfing Sri Lanka police have in recent months become more aggressive in going online to entrap gay men, according to the Associated Press.

The police have been masquerading as gay men seeking partners and placing ads on sites that cater to gays. Men who respond to the ads have been subsequently arrested.

The Sri Lankan police official in charge of vice said: "The new millennium came with unexpected changes in the use of technology in committing crimes. We had to respond."

"We got 79 cases this way," he told the news agency.

"It was great arresting them."

"We are dealing with a different type of criminal and the spread of new crimes," the official who handles information technology for the police ministry.

"This requires security and technical expertise to be able to patrol the Internet the same way we patrol streets."

A web site catering to Sri Lankan gays warns readers about the perils of being gay.

"Guess who's watching? Sri Lankan state security. Try to avoid always logging on from the same location," gaysrilanka.com warns.

Another warning at the bottom of the homepage reads: ├п┬┐┬╜Warning: Gay sex or any homosexual activity in Sri Lanka puts you at risk of arrest, deportation or imprisonment and any sexual encounter is undertaken at your own risk.├п┬┐┬╜
