There is some truth the the point that life can be very boring in Pattaya. Yes, there are many people who drag their butt out to bars everynight, but other than that, eating out, and some crappy mainstream movies, there isn't so much. How many really old guys love late night karaoke and discos? Also, it is true that many of us are tied to living here by economic concerns; it is indeed hard to move back to the west unless you are quite wealthy.

That said, if there are things you enjoy in your leisure, perhaps a special project, maybe you want to write a book, etc. In my case I love to read and watch all kinds of movies, and I could occupy several lifetimes doing that, so if you are easily amused like I am, it can really be quite OK.

It is also true there are lots of alkies among us. However, I do feel that moving here doesn't have to make you one. I was never one before, am not one here, and never will be one. I think by the time you get to retirement age, even early retirement like I am doing, you have your relationship to the sauce sorted out for better or worse.

I think that retirement needs to be thought out and planned no matter where you want to spend your time.

With some years still to go, I plan to keep some property stake in the UK and split my time between here and Thailand. So much depends on my partner, and even more on my pension!!

I just cannot imagine spending the whole year in Thailand, and even more so when my man talks about having a house in Loei (his home town) and enjoying the quiet life! I love that idea, for a few weeks at a time perhaps! I have lived in London for years now and could not imagine giving up my stake in this city. Pattaya may not be the most attractive city on earth, but it has the beach and the night life.

BTW, I love living in Pattaya and am not bored. I do have a slower pace and I am very relaxed. I am retired, so so what. I gave up some things and I got some new things, just like any move.

I agree with you. I too come from London and am pensioner so it is quite difficult now to live in UK.
However I have decided ( my Doctor agrees) to spend the 5 months of UK winter in Thailand based in Pattaya. Even paying rent in Pattaya and keeping up everything in London I can come out with a little profit! Pattay is not the most exciting place but it provides a decent base. It will allow me to go to Bangladesh, Malaysia etc.
