I found this blog through the BBC -- updated during UK time every day. A lot of gruesome photos, and not much English, but it brings some local perspective:

Yes it's a shocking abuse of an entire nation by these wretched military thugs that have raped Burma for 40 years. I'm pleased to see that while Britain is still huffing and puffing on the sidelines, France and the US are leading the way in calling for action to be taken against the junta.

The French strong suit in the world of diplomacy is posturing. It's such a pity that the major EU country whose companies have major commercial activities in Burma is ... France - with Total, the oil explorer. I did notice the French Foreign Minister making a statement of the bleeding obvious during a newscast - the countries in the only position to make a real impact are Burma's neighbours in ASEAN, including China. Undoubtedly those whose complain the most that various countries are not conducting diplomacy via the front pages of the world's press will also be among the first to tell us "you can't believe everything you read in the newspapers"

These are the shocking images from Burma of a Japanese journalists as he lay dying after soldiers opened fire on thousands of anti-government protesters.

Kenji Nagai held his camera above his head to continue taking photos even as a soldier pointed a gun at his chest.

He was one of at least nine people who were killed when troops opened fire after ordering the protesters to move on. Another 11 were reported injured.

Thousands of protesters are dead and the bodies of hundreds of executed monks have been dumped in the jungle, a former intelligence officer for Burma's ruling junta has revealed.

The most senior official to defect so far, Hla Win, said: "Many more people have been killed in recent days than you've heard about. The bodies can be counted in several thousand."

Mr Win, who spoke out as a Swedish diplomat predicted that the revolt has failed, said he fled when he was ordered to take part in a massacre of holy men. He has now reached the border with Thailand. ...

Yes it's a great shame that the revolt appears to have failed. But how could it otherwise? Unarmed civilians are no match for a ruthless military willing and able to shoot its own people. It's a great pity that the ordinary folk of Burma could not get access to weapons. Then the situation might change, and change very quickly.
