Hi! I have travelled on this journey although a few years ago but I suppose it hasn't changed much.

1. I suggest you take the train at Johor Bahru as the fare is in Malaysian Ringit and not Sngapore Dollars which
are twice as expensive. You can get a bus - about 3/4 hour from Singapore.

2. There is NO direct train! Take the train (2) from Johor to Kuala Lumpar 09.15 arr. 1450. (or 32 at 11.18 arr. 17.20) Then take train
8 from KL to Butterworth (Penang) 19.50 arr. 06.34. Go through immigration and buy a ticket immediately for train 36 which leaves at
14.20 and arrives BKK at 12.10

The sleepers are comfortable and the BKK train has a dining room.
Hope you have a good journey - you will meet interesting people

Made one confusing error. You do not go through immigration at Butterworth but at PADANG BASAR. You just get off train and back on again.

Yes, That's correct.

It's a nice trip. It's worth to take some time and allow some stops, i.e. in KL, Butterworth (for Penang) and Hand yai for Had Sonkhla (the beaches) or Hua Hin.

Try the following website which includes info on Bangkok/Penang/Singapore train travel.
The info is quite comprehensive with train schedules and fare rates (but the latter need to be checked for up-to-date info) as well as useful links etc. Well worth a look !
