Dr. Philippe Seur, may be well known to many, but the true extent of his work is not fully comprehended by the majority, which is the reason weтАЩre publicizing his case. For the last seven years, heтАЩs been fighting what amounts to the Third World War тАУ the war against AIDS, virtually single-handedly, under-funded and underappreciated AND HEтАЩS TIRED. Now, itтАЩs time to call for more support in the fight against this insidious virus, which is gnawing at the core of the world community, namely its DNA. Support in terms of time, energy and money тАУ otherwise the consequences donтАЩt bear thinking about. ItтАЩs a war the human race cannot afford to lose, and at the moment, itтАЩs hovering in the balance. This is no hyperbole, exaggeration or hype. ItтАЩs the reality of the situation.

The PGF (Pattaya Gay Festival), which has already generously contributed millions of baht to the HEARTT 2000 cause, and are thankful to the continuing generosity of so many, is constantly being asked to help fund Dr. Philippe, this last main bill to the sum of 887,974 THB тАУ his medications for one month. This represents purchase of radically expensive triple-therapy ARV medicine for his current 430 patients, most of whom are being helped by the governmentтАЩs 30 Baht scheme or Private Insurance. Notice I say - helped тАУ because the funds provided are woefully inadequate. For example, under the governmentтАЩs scheme, only 5,000 Baht is contributed per patient, whereas the true cost may be as much as 12,000 Baht, a shortfall of 7,000 Baht, which Dr. Philippe/Heart 2000 must pay.

Then thereтАЩs the problem of the patients themselves. They develop resistance to one component in the anti-viral mix, meaning a needed substitution of that particular medicine, because of viral mutation. Or another medical component may turn toxic for that particular patient, yet again requiring a new substitution. Then thereтАЩs the extraneous (external) cost of helping the patients pay their living expenses as they might be incapacitated and unable to pay their rent тАУ again paid by Dr. Philippe .

So far in the AIDS war, Dr. Philippe has treated 1444 patients, most with spectacular results. Turning around a situation where the patient, for example, may have had full blown AIDS, accompanied by several Opportunistic Infections тАУ the diseases which might actually kill the patient. The condition has been reversed and the opportunistic diseases cured. Not AIDS, of course, because there is currently no cure. All that can be done is to keep it in check and stop it taking over the patientтАЩs DNA and replicating itself. Meaning, even when the viral load reaches the Magic figure of < 50 copies/ml of blood where the virus is held static, the patients, who will be on medication for the rest of their lives, cannot afford to miss one dose; else the virus will once more prevail.

Dr. Philippe has kept a research data base of his patients, which is probably one of the most comprehensive in SE Asia. As part of this, he has a chart showing the patientsтАЩ progress, which he shows and gives to the patients, who when the green line showing viral load reaches the 50 figure will react ecstatically. But not so Dr. Philippe, he will still be in agony, for he knows the patient must still wage a ceaseless fight. The doctor suffers as much, if not more than the patient.

Dr. Philippe has to live with AIDS everyday of his life. Not that heтАЩs got the virus himself, heтАЩs just constantly surrounded by those who do тАУ everyday from 2 to 10 pm, without let up. No pay, no holidays, brief solace from the governmentтАЩs new extended, more humanitarian policy towards HIV/AIDS, but no essential relief. And, good people, the doctor is showing the strain, HE NEEDS HELP AND HE NEEDS IT NOW. So, folks, follow his advice and save him work by using condoms тАУ EVERYTIME тАУ if youтАЩre not sureтАж but most of all CONTRIBUTE. To repeat, this is not a war we can afford to lose тАУ and no man is an island тАУ weтАЩre all involved, so give now, dig deeply and Help Ensure Aids Rescue in Thailand Together (HEARTT 2000).
