This competition was held in Budapest this year, as the 2006 contest was won by Mr Gay Hungary. There were representatives of twenty two countries, apparently it would have been twenty three but Mr Gay Poland was attacked by anti gay protesters on his way to the airport, they didnтАЩt want their country represented at a gay event, and Mr Gay Poland was taken to Hospital.

My boyfriend and I decided to take full advantage of being in Budapest for this competition, which took place over three days, and started with the Swimwear Competition on an open stage in the City Park behind Heroes Square. There were around a thousand spectators and the show started with a dance routine to тАЬAt the Car WashтАЭ, which allowed for water sports, and good photo opportunities.

An appalling band took over on stage while the boys retired back stage to touch up their makeup and adjust their swimwear! Some sneaky photographers followed them back stage, on the pretext of photographing the Hungarian Drag artists as they came off stage. There were some cute guys, and some not so cute guys, and quite a lot were fairly camp.

The boys returned to the stage to parade to give the judges and audience an opportunity to assess their assets.

Eventually the contenders for Mr Gay Swimwear were reduced to three, and then won by Mr Gay Germany. The three finalists are at the front, with the winner on the left, then Mr Gay Gran Canaria in the middle, and Mr Gay Spain on the right.

Our own favourite in swimwear competition, Mr Gay Italy:

The following night there was a talent contest for all the guys at the Bohemian Alibi club, normally quite a rough gay club with a great mixture of clientele, at which the cutest guys usually turned out to be dykes.
Mr Gay Netherlands played the saxophone, Mr Gay Ireland performed an energetic dance routine, but ran out of puff half way through, unlike Mr Gay Lapland who sang a song twice for some reason, and on each occasion carried on and off stage a bucket, that seemed to form no part of his act. My bf tried to convince me it was because the bucket is the national symbol of Lapland! Mr Gay Italy read a poem in Italian, and Mr Gay Finland(a soldier) turned out to be a sensational ballroom dancer, having brought his sister in law as dance partner, and rightly won the talent competition.

The charming and cute Mr Gay France kindly gave us his VIP tickets to the grand finale the following night. This was a rather interminable affair, and took place appropriately, in a circus performing area, and the competition was interspersed with gymnastic exhibitions by the Russian State Circus!

After lots of dancing about and posing and interviews for the competitors, and lots of drooling by the spectators, we were reduced to the final three in the competition. Mr Gay Ireland, Mr Gay UK, and Mr Gay Germany. Mr Gay UK, a policeman, immediately burst into tears on the announcement that he had made the last three, and had to be comforted by the other competitors. He sobbed intermittently throughout the rest of the proceedings.

The events now became even more surreal, as, for a final test, this last trio were asked to sing their own national anthems. Mr Gay UK managed to start тАЬGod save our gracious queenтАЭ started sobbing again, continued but then either forgot the words or started making up his own. Mr Gay Germany, who was of Indian origin, didnтАЩt know the words to the German national anthem, so sang the Indian national anthem, while Mr Gay Ireland also didnтАЩt know his anthem, and sang Baa Baa Black Sheep instead!
For an awful moment it looked like the ability to at least start his own anthem, might lead to the singularly unattractive sobbing policeman from the UK being the winner. Fortunately it was not to be, and the fairly suave Mr Gay Germany was declared triumphant, and it was on to a party in the park which lasted to dawn.

The guys who took part were actually mostly pretty sweet, and were all supportive of each other and friendly to the people around. Talking to some of them over the three days, they were all really having fun, and talked of the event as a great experience. It was fun for us too, in a kind of cruising kitsch way. For me, I would have voted as winner the charming Mr Gay France, my bf would have voted for Mr Gay Italy.........and Mr Gay Spain.......and possibly Mr Gay Portugal......

Stuff the boys', I want to know who's the hottie in the yellow checked shirt in the last three pics??? Woooooohhhh

Actually if I had boys like that at my local carwash, I'd get my car washed everyday. In fact knowing me, I'd make arrangements for some of them to come and do it privately.

So who actually won Mr Gay Europe, Brad?

Mr Gay Germany, on the left in the last photo, and also winner of the swimwear competition.

Mr "drooling old fart" looks strangely familiar, not sure? Maybe its just because they all look like that.
This rather seedy affair reinforces in me certain misgivings about my own gay sexual orientation. Do we have such a long way to go still, and just when I thought beauty pageants had been finally relegated to the rubbish heap where they belong, along come the boys in pink dying to be queen for a year, all eagerly posing with Mr drooling old queer.

Is this the wrong attitude, I dunno, I am confused?

Thanks for this excellent post Brad. I happened to find it by chance on a rare visit to this forum, god (spikes) knows why this has to lurk on this forum when such dull posts/threads continue to dominate the main forum

Thanks Michael for your comments, I am glad that you enjoyed the post. It makes the effort worthwhile when you get positive feedback!

It was my decision to post in the Global Forum, as it seemed the appropriate place. There is a kind of catch 22 here. If you post in the forums other than the Gay Thailand one, then minimal people by comparison read your thread, on the other hand if there aren't enough interesting posts in these other forums, why would anyone bother to visit?!

So I posted here rather than be shuffled off here by jinks!

You might want to read my post in the Any Other Country Forum, about the Gay Pride March in Budapest.

I have been thinking about posting my recent experiences with my bf, when we were together in Europe, Budapest, for the first time, as opposed to travelling together in Asia. It has been a wonderful learning curve for both of us.........but in which forum should I post it?!

It was in Peoples Park, behind Hero Square. Very public.
