View Full Version : Prescription drugs, is it like Mexico?

August 16th, 2007, 12:11
I am sure this topic has been up before, blow me if I can find it. Anyway, do you need prescriptions for buying prescription drugs in pharmacies in Thailand? Its just that someone asked me to get them some things on my next visit, they said it might be cheaper. I know there are generic forms of this and that, are these any good, will they be cheaper? Obviously I can't get a stash for them if a prescription is required.

They wanted Lipitor (cholesterol lowering, I think) which he said was very expensive, anyone know the price of these there, and if you need a prescription?

but you will really need to go to a drug store you trust-like the one in Sunnee Plaza where the pharmacist in the evening also works as Pattya's Hospital pharmacist. At a chain store like Boots you will need a prescription but there are many dodgy drugs on the market like Viagra although I doubt they would go to the lengths of faking Lipitor..but you can't take a chance like that with your ticker.

Valium and sleeping pills etc are easily available without prescription for neurotic housewives like Mrs O'Booze and she takes a handful every morning to get her through the day.

What goodies can you get in Mexico ??..I plan to go there early next year .

Lipitor Atorvastatin is prescription only here in Oz, and is available in 2 dose sizes 20mg and 40mg.

From my experiences in Thailand, I would not trust my long term health on a cheap product you may or not be able to trust. I would not buy for a friend or family member for that reason.

I have always been able to buy almost anything over the counter and I always used to use the pharmacy at Chit Lom as you enter one of the shopping centers from the station its on the left. Can't remember which exit it is though. Antibiotics Viagra and even Valium on one trip. I did ask for some amphetamines once but he drew the line there.

Lipitor (atorvastatin) is a Cholesterol lowering drug I have just started taking it. It comes in various sizes 10, 20, 30 and 40 mg it is expensive here in Saudi I buy it over the counter 1 box of 30 X 10 mg tablets costs $US 35. I would be interested to know what they cost in Thailand

Well said its better to play safe and pay a bit more or ask you local doctor for some that has been given to try out , often it will save you at least your first months supply free.

No prescriptions needed at Boots. For the best prices in town, go to Fascino on North Pattaya Road. This is a very large well stocked place where you also need no prescriptions. You only need scrips for things like strong pain killers that could be used by drug addicts.

Only I won't be anywhere near Phutty Yah, Bangkok anyone? Boots? Are you sure?

In H-Kong drugs are sold by the doctor and the mark up is anyone guess, a rather odd situation I feel, because the real price of anything is unknown. Its obviously easier to shop around at a pharmacies than it is at doctors practises, consultation fees alone would eat you up.

If Lipitor, or even the generic is cheaper, then there could be no harm in buying surely, assuming you dont need a prescription, or are there a lot of fake drugs out there, made to look like the real thing? Are you only guaranteed genuine drugs if you are holding a prescription, and how is that a guarantee anyway?

Mexico you can get whatever you want without prescription and its much cheaper than in America. Its a feast for the "snow birds", aged doodles, sniffing out cheaper prescription drugs. I have no idea whats up in that country as far as health care is concerned or protection of pharmaceutical giants go, but the "poor old folks" are forced to cross the border into Mexico by the millions to pick up their drugs. I have witnessed this myself a number of times. They all look quite frail and scared too, like they are on the verge of being assaulted by real third world poverty the minute they step out of their car, I think most believe it is contagious.

Do not try to carry drugs internationally. It can cause you great delays. That is if they don't KEEP you.

apart from valium, can the liquid form of ketamine available in Bangkok drugstores?
any direction?

Good question? I am assuming taking boxes of a cholesterol lowering drug, fully labelled, shouldn't cause much concern, at least not leaving the country, and there is no indicated tax on medication this end ( I assume again, unless its wholesale quantities) so arrivals should also present no problems. This is hardly risk taking.

Intravenous ketamine, unless you are a vet is a different story. Chrising stop trying to sabotage a perfectly reasonable post, no I don't want to buy illegal drugs in Thailand, and its not why I am asking. I might be fit but I'm not Australian or a bimbo. I wonder what happened to that Schapelle Corby wacko, caught in Bali, the one that shrieked bits of the lords prayer inbetween hurling vile profanities at the judges when she was sentenced.
I had to have a chortle, the Australian media was cursing the vile Balinese for apprehending Corby (see bomber) while bleating on about "our Schapelle", at the same time however she was shown on the rest of the worlds media as a fucking half wit who thought she could cover her holiday expenses by selling shit to a few scurvy surfers.

I don't think you'll have any problems taking the cholesterol drugs back into Hongkers with you Cedric, my main worry would be to make sure that what you buy in Bangkok is the real thing, and not some watered down version thereof. Counterfeit drugs is big business in SE Asia, especially Thailand, so take the advice offered above and buy from a 100% reputable source.

August 17th, 2007, 10:13
Yes Aunty I agree, there could be no reason for me to overlook the obvious here. Anyone have a 100% reliable pharmacy in mind in Bangkok, that will also overlook the little inconvenience of a lack of a prescription, for perfectly standard medications? Would a hospital pharmacy be the best option, just I thought they would be the first to ask questions?

... Siam Drug (branches everywhere eg. basement of Silom Complex), but really if you're worried why wouldn't you go to a reputable hospital (BNH or Bangkok Christian) and buy from their pharmacy - although there you would have to see a doctor first (for a nominal fee). There's also a family-run drug store between Silom Complex and Dusit Thani Hotel; used to be run by an old Chinese pharmacist and now I think it's his grandson running it

There is a nice little pharmacy between Nana and the Marriott Hotel in Bangkok that has everything you could want. He's been there for years and everything has worked so far.

Which Marriot and what is Nana? Thanks in advance. Hovelturd the medication is not for my own use it's for a friend, otherwise I could just as easily get it here on prescription. It apparently cost a fortune here.
Anyone know how much Lipitor 20mg in fact costs in Thailand? I think it acts in some way on the erectile tissue chemicals, because he has a constant hard on in the showers at the club, he does in fact have a cholesterol problem and he is only thirty three so it is a bit suspect. Let that be a lesson to all you pot roast types, and remember French food=death, especially now that red wine has also been discovered to be a carcinogenic.

the medication is not for my own use it's for a friendOh, do you know some poor people who need to get their medicine on the cheap? Are they as interesting as the rest of us?
