Is anyone familiar with "friendship" bar in Chiang Mai, behing the night markets?
I've been there a couple of times and would like to hear from any other guys who have done so.

I was there in October, and it was very quiet. Not much activity. All of the night market area bars were very quite and mostly empty when I was there. The go-go bars on the north side of town near Novotel Hotel werea little busier, but not real active.

I am going back in November, but taking my bf with me. Anyone suggest a good gay place to stay??

Heard good things about these places (but never stayed):

We have stayed at the Montri Hotel, and would recommend for price (quite inexpensive) and location (very central to everything . . . walking distance to most things of interest in downtown Chiang Mai).
Rooms are spartan and small, but clean and good value for the price. If you decide on the Montri, ask for a 'corner' room, they are quite a bit larger.

As in all of Thailand (to a very great extent that is), hotels in general don't give a tinker's damn whether you are gay or not.

Cheers ...

I have just booked a room in the Novotel, which should be very convenient for the Chang Phuak bars, has a pool, is not located in the touristy places, and has cheap rates if booked directly trough their website (novotel.com). From one of the contributors here (Mr Atri I think) and also from the thai webboards, I also understand there is no problem with bringing one guest (or more). They have a free shuttle to the Night Market from where you will find very easily (if not cheap) some tuk tuk to bring you back to the hotel ; I always found the other way (i.e. leaving Chang Phuak at night) to be much more difficult.

funny how people looks different at the same. There are two bars going to in cm if you are not into gogo bars .the one is Friendship and the other is mtv just behind Friendship. maybe there are some others to .Yes it is quiet, if you compare to bangkok and pattaya. it is like comparing apples to potatoes. I think that if you go there in weekends much more is happening. I was there in may not at all high-season , but i met some great guys there. I like the relaxed way of living there. Yes no DJ, no G.O.D. no Silom soi 2 or 4, no boystown or sunnee plaza. just a different part of thailand that i like.next time i think i go to a smaller town in Thailand. and 'i am sure i will still have fun. btw, I can tell you that many of the guys have done the bkk and pattaya run, but wantet to be back in chiang mai.some are even going to luang prabang in laos, funny quite place, just know where to go, meet the locals, every night a lot of friends was motorbyking in to a bloody funny local disco 3-5 klm out off the city center. After the disco closed, far to eearly, whe all headed to a small place with food , music and Lao beer. funny rememberimgs. now i go to sleap, hehe to much gin tonic

The Lotus Hotel is one of the best gay hotels anywhere. Whilst the standrad rooms are small the two new ones at the front with mezzanine bedroom above sitting room, with interent connection, are excellent: see http://www.lotus-hotel.com/

The outside bar is fun early evening, you may even get to buy a beer for the boy on a passing elephant.

Stayed there 3 times and one time in Sheraton ( very far away and you need always tuktuk ). Also have had a look at the Gay-Lotus-Hotel during my stay but it will be never my choice. I liked the room in Novotel (very big bed) and no problem with guests. Booking over asia-rooms can be cheaper than to book directly. They are very helpful in Novotel at the Bell Service. Transfers very cheap for 70 baht from and to airport and you can order over email directly. Free shuttle to and from nightbasar. Extensive breakfast buffet and super cheap lunch buffet for 195 baht (means when i stayed there last time - can have changed ).In walking distance you have doi boy-freeguy-circle pub-shopping-garden bar and adams apple (when they will be ready with renovation) and massage marnmaichaikaa. Its easy to make friendship with one or more tuktukdrivers and so you will never have problems to come back to the hotel.
Also stayed one time in normal Lotos Hotel at the shopping center near house of male in doi sutthep wing and would do it again also. No control who is going in or out because of the big lobby and super buffet and swimming pool.
