On Samui find Chaweng Beach in the centre of the strip go to Starbucks Coffee Shop.

In the horse shoe soi behind it are 2 -3 host bars.

From there you can get directions for

The Star Cabaret,

The Gbar

There are two other cabaret spots.

Yes, the scene is mostly straight, but the boys are the same as in every place in Thailand.

There is one Gay Guest house The Little Palace www.littlepalace.org/ (http://www.littlepalace.org/)
Little Palace Residence Small private owner occupied residence with pool and two guest bedrooms located south of Chaweng just off the main road to Lamai opposite the Fairhouse Resort. Phone +66 (0) 895 878 774, Fax + 66 (0) 7723 1016

The Island is well worth a trip around... One unique feature is a Lady Budda.

First take no notice of there being no gay scene

go to this site and explore

http://www.gaykohsamui.net/
for future reference note the net not com

There have been a few threads on KS in the last 2 years, try the search function

I will come back later with some more detail

There is also a gay koh samui group at yahoogroups

here is a link to a thread on the same subject for friends who have returned and plan a side trip again from Phuket in Jan. There is another thread I will look for

http://www.sawatdee-gay-thailand.com/fo ... oh%20samui (http://www.sawatdee-gay-thailand.com/forum/amsterdam-cabaret-in-koh-samui-any-info-t6494.html?highlight=koh%20samui)

... there are no gay bars and there are no gogo bars ....

Not so! You're right there are no go-go bars but there are a couple of gay bars in Chawaeng Beach.
But you're also right about it being very Hetero. Lots of families, lots of young couples, lots of horny hetero singles etc.

The gaykohsamui website is an excellent reference.

It's been three or four years since I last stepped foot on Ko Samui and I have been thinking about planing a return. Last time I stayed at Little Palace, expensive but nice. The old German that owned the place was getting up in years, anyone have current info on the place?

Amsterdam bar is still running adds in all the gay mags, so it must be still going.

The songtows were expensive to get around the island but motocy rentals were cheap.

When I went in December the surf on the beaches was ultra high with warning flags out for undertow. No one was in the water. Is it always that way?

I think one needs to let go of ones preconceived notions of what makes up a "gay" place when one travels outside of the Western Hemisphere.

Ko Samui is absolutely fabulous. Gay, shmay. Whatever. You'll get very little attitude and lots of laid.

(It is also a tropical Island if that matters to you)

Oh! Oh!

Do they still do the Moon Phase Parties on Samui and Pha Ngan?

That shit was totally rock-star a few years ago!

Aot87: You might have better luck asking about Ko Samui over at www.lonelyplanet.com/ (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/) both in the gay section and the travel section.

This board is becoming more and more Pataya-centric. A very good place for information on Pattaya but forget the rest of Thailand.

There is only reason to visit Koh Samui, and that is to stay in the Muang Kulaypan. Very relaxed, very friendly staff. Fun design.

Otherwise the place is full of aggressive tattooed breeding tourists, and surly local population. The place has been devoloped beyond the island's, and it's population's, abilities to deal with, and I find the locals less friendly than any where else in Thailand.

Sounds like the place to avoid due to the aggressive tattooed breeding tourists, even if I am a tourist myself I don't want to stay somewhere tattooed Mary's act all butch on holiday.

Spent 10 days there last year. Beautiful island - hired a motornike for the whole time and it was very nice to drive around the entire island. Having said that, I will probably never go back. It is very hetro, but that never caused me any problems in terms of anything vaguely aggressive or homophobic. It is very western especially around Chaweng - easier to find a McDonalds or a Starbucks than anything Thai. Definitely more expensive that other parts of Thailand - even for basic things like a Kao Pad Moo. The gay bars are fine if you like your bars quite empty (tempted to say "dead"), and your boys bottom/girly/cabaret-like.

Definitely not an island i would recommend to anyone other than a westerner who rarely travels afar and wants their home comforts (if you call McDonalds, KFC, Starbucks, and Irish bars home comforts), close by and prefers to be in a resort-type environment. Koh Samui? More like Koh Farang!

Yes, the main strip is all Western food or Thai food Westernized but if you walk off the main beach road inland there are more Thai style places. One we went to was not that far off the strip, the sign was only in Thai and was a nice garden restaurant.

From the Amsterdam bar street, go one street further down and take a right, inland. Walk over a small bridge and along a series of food stalls and some outdoor markets. On your left you will see a garden restaurant with tables in little private alcoves. The food was excellent. They may not have a menu in English, take a Thai boy from one of the bars.
