Iranian airline rejects safety warnings

Tehran (dpa) - Iran's Mahan Air on Sunday rejected claims by the British Department for Transport that the airline was unsafe, the Mehr news agency reported.

Mahan Air General Manager Hamd Arabnejad told Mehr that all the airline's planes were safe and accused the British side to cause a ballyhoo through groundless claims.

Mahan Air was on Friday asked by British transportation authorities to suspend its five weekly flights between Tehran and Manchester over safety concerns.

Arabnejad said his airlines would carefully follow up the case.

The Tehran-based network of Mahan Air, which began operations in 1992, has 21 destinations in 10 countries, including Dusseldorf, Germany.

Sanctions imposed by the United States are a major headache for civil aviation in Iran, even for the country's main airliner Iran Air (Homa).

Unconfirmed reports say one third of Iranian planes can no longer be used and have been the reason for crashes in recent years.

Relevant spare parts are manufactured inside Iran or purchased on the black market.

Mahan Air does fly from Tehran to Bangkok, but I think the chances of any of our members choosing to use it to get here were zero to slim in the first place.

Mahan Air had a cheap service from Manchester to Bangkok via Tehran, so it is possible some forum members may be affected.

Nice try, ttom, but it looks like your post wasn't relevant enough to keep it from being banished from the Thailand forum.
