View Full Version : Air-Chief Marshall inspecting Pattaya bars

February 10th, 2006, 18:43
Interior Ministry visit imminent - Bars are told to close at 1am and operate within the law or face the consequences.

A meeting now from the Town-in-Town Hotel in Central Pattaya, co-chaired by Khun Chawalit, Deputy Chief of Banglamung District and Police Colonel Somnook, the Pattaya Police Chief. A selection of bar operators were called to the meeting to discuss plans to reintroduce the bar operating regulations which have been relaxed over the previous high season months. The Interior Minister is due in Pattaya shortly and local authorities must ensure that the law is adhered to. For now the 1am closing time for bars must be followed and nudity and explicit shows cannot be conducted.

It is expected that some bars will disregard these instructions. They were told that if the Interior Ministry catch any bars operating outside the law, the penalties will be severe. The Interior Minister, Air Chief-Marshall Kongdaert is expected to make a detailed inspection of bars and other late night entertainment venues around Pattaya this coming Friday and Saturday. The bar operators were also told to ensure that their operating licenses are correct.

Presumably this requires an Airforce type because some expats have been described as being as high as a kite.

Wonder why government want that, with obviosly the number of tourists going down. Pattaya with all its bars cannot live with this short opening times. Fever tourist will come and city loose taxes and cash.
But okay, maybe they can get some of Thaksins billions?

The government wants that because the type of tourist who comes to Thailand for bars that operate illegally is not the type of tourist that the government wants.

Capisce?

If the law proposal making closing time 11pm goes through it means Thaksin wants to kill the nightlife in Thailand. I don't think it will happen, but then again I didn't think they were serious about 1am either.

don't they just let you buy rounds before 1am and let you stay and drink them?

No. Doesn't work like that.

some bars were reporting that's the way they did it, so it must have worked for them

Yes, the gov't wants the tourist who buys the million baht card, which has already reached 0.2% (yes, that's 2 HUNDREDTHS of one percent) of its target for membership. Hmm, in 500 years, maybe?

0.2% (yes, that's 2 HUNDREDTHS of one percent)

Really? I thought that'd be 0.02% - so which is it?

0.2% (yes, that's 2 TENTHS of one percent) <<< sorry for the mistake!

It was in an article in the Nation web site 2-3 days ago.
