View Full Version : That Thai photo "pose"...

One of many things I've gotten a kick out of on photo walks is the common "pose" so many Thai use when a camera is pointed their way: the "framing" of the face with the thumb and forefinger.

The best translation I've been able to come up with from friends there is that it's a somewhat jocular way or saying "oh, aren't I cute??" I've taken that to also mean "hey, I'm just picture perfect - and here's the frame!"

Does anyone else have a different "translation"?

This guy with the machete on his shoulder was wading in canal with two other younger friends. I was trying to figure out what they were "hunting" when they spotted me and started posing.

Here's another image of them, with a different one doing the "framing" thing:

I've photographed the same hundreds/thousands of times (intermixed with the old "V" for victory sign) and I'm not sure if it has any meaning other than "look at me." Typically, in my experience, using it is mildly associated with being a bit of a showoff or smart aleck. But I've seen kids as young as 3 use it too (mimicking their older siblings).

Edit....to see if I can add a couple of photos from April (Songkran) in Chiangmai:

A Thai fried of mine, who I've known for about 5 years, says the pose was made popular by a Thai model. I'll ask him for more details the next time we talk. It is cute, isn't it?

Several years ago I was told the thumb and finger forms the English letter L which represents the word "Law"which is a transliteration of the this word meaning "Handsome".

This is what I really like to see on this forum, and it's when the forum is at its best. People posting their pics' of Thailand.

They don't have to be 'naughty' pictures to still be great shots of cute Thai guys, or to capture the joy of hoildays in Thailand and its people. Thanks bao-bao for starting this thread!

As a fan of the English comedy series French and Saunders. Dawn French puts an L using her fingers to her forehead while mouthing the word "Loser" :flower:

Jim Carrey does the same thing in his Ace Venture Pet Detective films. Don't know which came first.

'Handsome' usually translates as 'roop lor' or just 'lor' as pointed out by jvt2222 above. Although it is sometimes spelled 'loeploh' as in Loeploh and Nalac.....

Sorry to dispel any thoughts that 'the pose' is based on the farang letter 'L' but it can be seen all across SE Asia - Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore etc.....

I've seen a lot of old queens use this pose to push up the face and cover a turkey neck. Often in a sitting position with the elbow on a table

Manhole try and drag yourself from the gutter for a breath of fresh air once in awhile. Me thinks you protest too much down on your knees on Suneeplaza.

I dunno, Ceddie...when's the last time any of the members here posted a piccie of a cute young girl?

Wow, that many people on one bike, that should be sent to Madam VP Gore for his save the climate campaign. The most bang for the buck and less pollution too. Damn, bet that motor is whining though.

Those six Thais probably weight less than one typical adult farang.

you are right my boy genius, wonder getting back to he story line if any one has ask a Thai guy why they do that with the face framing or if all we have read thus far is just one big guess at the meaning. Someone Run out and ask some old Babushka where it came from.

Jingthing, many of the board members have photo albums posted here that are well worth browsing through. If you haven't taken the time to do so, try the "User Photo Index" link in the upper right hand corner of the page.

But beware - it can easily eat up an hour or two!

Here's the additional proof you asked for:

Someone was boo-hooing the other day about how "humiliated" that Laotian jewelry store robber must feel to have his picture featured on a gay website.

I wonder how the fathers of all those pre-pubescent Thai boys would feel?

This one was a year ago, but I suppose it doesn't count since she's sitting behind a pile of hot male phallic items. :rolling:

If you look close I bet you can find the 7th one behind the boy that is standing... look just past the top of his head

Nope, I think that is his short hair showing though, it does look like another head could be back there, upon close inspection it seems to be hairline not head

You were correct, John. Smiles posted a better version of this detail when the question first came up a few months ago. I didn't do a very good job of it here, but if you look closely you can clearly see the crescent of a seventh head peeking up behind the standing kid.

exactly the same gesture, and here in France, it's just a way of saying "hey I'm a star, look how good I look", as models often do that on magazines...
