In my person opinion I would rather say in Nong Khai and do a day trip to Vientiane. Better food in Nong Khai and you get better value for your Bhat for a hotel in Thailand vrs. most anything in Laos.

Louangphabang is worth the trip. Take the bus from Vientiane and don't eat too much before the trip, slow and painful best describes the route but very nice views. Do it once and will you will not want to do it again.

Much obliged for any info on good gay friendly accomodation in Vientiane, Laos.

Stayed at the Douang Deuane Hotel early this year with my BF. Excellent value for your money - $$.

Had a great time in Vientiane and will be going back in the not too distant future.
Enjoy - It's worth the hassle of getting thro' immigration.

Gay owned, gay friendly. Centrally located. Nice rooms. Only boys for staff, some are very handsome.

About 700 TBT for a good room.

Very popular with Lonely Planet backpackers.

I loved the Dragon Lodge as well and what a bunch of honeys working at the hotel/bar there. It is close to everything
and feels very gay friendly. Lots of info posted on boards and helpful staff.
If you are going to Vientienne for a tourist visa, you will need to stay at least two nites and be sure to arrive
in the morning at the Thai consulate with your photos, photocopies etc. and they will be ready the next weekday afternoon.

The other great thing about Vientienne is the food and there are many excellent restaurants serving Lao food as well
as French styled farang food. I had some great French bread there and enjoyed breakfasting on the Mekong River
with French bread, French or Swiss jam and an omelet with strong coffee.

The boys are gorgeous and abound in the parks and along the river. I didn't have the opportunity to explore these
delights but intend on revisting Laos and also see Luang Prabang in the near future...

I forgot to mention this one:
Saysouly Guesthouse on 23 Manthatulath Road in Vientiane
Tel: 021 218 383-4 and Fax: 021 223 757

It doesn't look much from outside but once inside, rooms are nice and excellent value for money.

I did take friends back to my room and never ever had any problems. The only thing is the guesthouse is popular abd therefore often fully booked.

If you sort of an night owl you can try the gay owned
Soradith Guest House on 150 Ban Dong Palan Thong in Vientiane
Tel: 021 413 651 and Fax 021 413 651
The gay pub on ground floor is very busy every evening from 21 to midnight. The sound rocks thu all floors.
Swiss owned and managed Europe restaurant (just behind the guest house, same owners) is one ot the best restaurants in Laos.

Soradith is located opp a large temple in old part of Vientiane, about 2 km away from Ngham Phu (Fountain square) but not fare too away from the new pre-fabricated Don Chan Palace Hotel with its famous all night club Lunar 36 Bistro. The Con Chan Palace is located on banks of Mekong about 5 km away from Vientiane centre and tuk tuk can get pretty expensive. Popular late hang out for handome gay crowd. During day time the sweeping views from hotel restaurants and bars are spendid.

Dragonlodge guesthouse is very very central, very friendly and the Singaporean owner Peter is very helpful. Worth buying him a beer to show you around and tell you were to go for nightlife.

Sorry but I think Dragon Inn is
1. Unfriendly (except for Peter)
2. Overpriced
3.Average location
4. Dark rooms

Try Duang Deuane or Riverrine (new on Mekong)
Do not get tempted by Beau Rivage as they will not allow guests..same with Tai Pan

Dragon lodge: That's exactly my opinion.

I know Peter for some time. And I never ever had any problems with his cute young staff.
I always found rooms where clean and comfortable.
The location is very good, especially with the new roads. I do know some parts or Vientiane well since I spend longer periods of time and I like the challenge this once sleepy, dusty mega village undergoing with massive assistance from Viet Nam.

There are guest houses charging less for a room but I always was pleased with the ratio. The only trouble is the place is so popular with back packers. If Dragon Lodge would charge less, it wouldn’t be very wise. On the other hand, they do not get the cheap Charlie’s which are usually just additional trouble.

I've enjoyed staying at the Dragon several times, but on my last two visits, I felt that the place has become quite run down. The air conditioning units are barely effective, as they have not been maintained (seemingly) in a very long time, in many rooms the TV does not work (not a huge problem for me, but still...), and all plumbing fixtures in the bathrooms are in a state of disrepair (I changed rooms twice during my last stay). Walls in the rooms are stained from years of use.

While the boys are very sweet, they are useless at cleaning rooms (never been trained I suppose). One room I stayed in had a huge dusty cobweb over the bed, until I asked to borrow a broom and remove it myself. And beyond making a bad and apparently taking a hose to the bathroom, the lads don't do things like sweep the floor, or even replace expired light bulbs.

The building has some nice features, and it would not take much to make a nice hotel out of it: a good cleaning, a coat of paint, removing all of the bits and bobbles from the bar and giving it a good clean, replace all of the broken shower heads and toilet hoses, odd bits of damaged furniture etc. With a small investment and a week's hard work, the Dragon could be quite nice again. For a little bit more, Peter could hide all the exposed wires inside walls and give the bathrooms a freshening up, and charge 50% more, which would alleviate the backpacker problem and bring greater value to the gay clientele.

I do agree with all that Peter is a great host, and we have had some great nights out with him as guide and drinking partner. I only hope he realises that the hotel needs some attention before regular customers give up and move on!

Tthom: I've heard that the two gay owners of Soradith have passed away -- have you stayed at Soradith in the past few months, by chance? We did go to the disco a coupld of times on my last visit -- it was still quite gay, but not without a few straight yobs (would Lao yobs be called lobs?) who inevitably got into a bottle fight on the second night.

Completely agree with John. When I was there (5 months ago) place was empty. He only gets tour groups and the occasional misinformed gay tourist. Virtually any place in town is better value. The staff seem to be picked for their looks and seem to do virtually nothing. My now BF was also snarled at when I brought him to my room for our first session. Never again!

It's amazing what some people will put up with just to sleep in a place termed "gay". I'll always choose the overall best value accommodations -- and it's rarely the "gay" ones.

I looked at Dragon Castle and while the gaydar rang loud and clear I also found the rooms run down, dark and overpriced for what they were offering. I did not stay and went to the Riverside Hotel which was bright and clean for around 15-18USD per night. (Its right next to the Deung Dang Hotel.

There were a few raised eyebrows when I had male visitors at first. Laos has very strict laws against Laos nationals "visiting" foreigners, but they quickly developed an attitude of "dont ask, dont tell" and were very friendly and helpful at all time. The big sign outside offering "new management" rates has been up for at least 2 years. They will negotiate rates, especially off season.

stayed at Douang Deuane Hotel last week. Booked on line at $15 but when I got to check in they said that the website was 2 years out of date and it was $20 a night. Didn't feel like arguing so simply said OK, i'll stay 2 nights instead of 3.

No problem with guests to room
