Chonburi Governor Congratulates Crime Suppression Activities in Pattaya. Pattaya City News

On Wednesday morning Khun Prachar, the Governor of Chonburi Province, made a lengthy speech to the multitude of local government employees and officials assembled in the really, really big conference room at Pattaya City Hall.
Beaming with satisfaction he told Pattaya officials the recent period of co-operation between police, city hall officers and soldiers based in Sattahip designed to crack down on crime had resulted in an amazing 70 percent clear-up rate. The governor said the period of co-operation has now ended but he asked City Hall to prepare a budget and a time frame to re-institute the co-operative program since it was such a great success.
He then talked about the idea he had come up with compelling all bars and restaurants, especially those operated by foreigners, to install CCTV cameras in their establishments. He asked city hall officers and police to spend time checking that every single bar and restaurant that comes under the guidelines has installed the CCTV cameras.
If they find any places that havenтАЩt yet complied then officers are asked to take names and details and forward these on to the governorтАЩs office where the offending business may have its license revoked. There is currently no truth in the rumour that purveyors of fruit, fried insects, som dtam or other wares from street carts will also have to install CCTV cameras."

Par for the course,

Pick on the Foreigners.

They are the ones who pay taxes, social security payments and Health insurance for the staff and annual tax.

The way I see it, why not look at the Thai run bars FIRST, non payment of licence fees, taxes, MOST of the underage employed in their bars, dirty shows etc etc.

I am glad to be OUT of it, Best of luck to him/them.

And some people still insist its easy work and the bars rake in millions, dream on!!!

Is the requirement about CCTV cameras applying just to Pattaya or the whole of Chonburi or is it nation wide.
Can a Governor change license laws just like that?
I agree it will be interesting to see what level of support it gets from Thai businesses. All those dodgy little karioke bars built for the locals; wonder if they will be checked. I understand that they have to be on the outside of the bar. This means they wont spot any crime taking place inside...strange!!
Yet again the Thais manage to completely misunderstand something. CCTV could cut crime and make tourists more secure if they are contunously monitored, linked to police on the ground, and above all placed in obvious places to get a good overview. Stuck above the door in a bar will be pointless.
I suspect they know this and the whole idea is yet another way of screwing money out of bar owners.

Lester,

It would be fabulous to know who was the real owner of the main recommended shop/shops selling the said CCTV ststems.

This and previous articles have said "IN the bar". Presumably to ensure that lewd goings on are recorded? Possibly a spate of DVDs on sale as at Krazy Dragon.

Kquill,

I understand where you are coming from but did you really pay health insurance on all your gogo boys and waiters etc. at 5% of their income and that of the dancers?

Did you really pay withholding tax on any commissions earned? Did you deduct withholding tax from invoices for services rendered?

Judging from your comments you won't be going back into the entertainment business again.

That's a shame because you ran a damn good operation.

HI puckered penguin,

No we didn't pay it for go go boys, and they can't pay tax on their tips as prostitution is illegal.

Also, it takes a month to get them registered which makes it impossible at the speed GO GO boys move around and change jobs.

We did pay it on showboys, bartenders, waiters, manager and assistant and D.J.s

But, tips are for their time as a gentleman escort, right? I'm sure the government would be happy to accept their tax money.

BG,

The government would be happy to accept any money for the coffers, as long as it's not their own.

It is a bit annoying, and I'm not trying to justify Go Go bars, when the Foreigners who get all the blame for everything, and the Thai owners don't pay salaries much of the time,[ common practice in Phuket and Chiang Mai, don't know about now, but with CERTAINTY previously ] gamble it away before salary day, cheat the boys as much as possible, don't pay the taxes [ rarely on anything ] act stupid and walk away from any/all problems!

Then the best they can churn out is "dark forces" and "Foreign elements and mafias" are responsible for Pattaya's woes.

Most of the mafias I have seen wear various shades of cream or brown matching shirts and trousers.

Well, as I've said before, it's a risk that inherent when you are in a vice business. If you're averse to exploitation, extortion, bribery, mafia, and unfairness in general, you shouldn't be engaged in any business that has anything to do with anything illegal (as prostitution is in Thailand).

U are so patient and polite in your replies kquill.

But just what plots are u organizing? Is it the return of Thaksin via Kalasin or the new TRT party now to be called Thai rak Kalasin?

Agreed. He is one of the few gentlemen on this board. The rest seem to immediately start screaming and name-calling the moment someone expresses an idea that is not in line with their particular world view.

It is the planting time now, but our plots have not had enough water yet!!

Thank you both [ puckered penguin and BG ] by the way. Not to worry, we will eat, either way.
